Little jwil was still testing positive this morning, so I kept him home today.  I did go in and speak to the headteacher today to find out what I should do.  They are following the national guidelines so after 3 days from his test I can send him back regardless. Technically that means he could have gone back today, but I'm glad I know now, and that extra day will only have been good for others!  I'll send him back tomorrow and hopefully I'll test negative so I can head into the office.

I'm on my new hours now - very much looking forward to Friday off

I feel so sorry for JK. When you look at what she actually says, it’s all very sensible. It’s like the mob is forcing everyone to not step out of line, with so much misinformation that half of them aren’t sure what they are protesting. It does really make you hesitate to voice any opinion.
And talking of fat …. I love how Alexander McCall Smith talks about larger ladies in the No1 Ladies Detective Agency series, with kindness, honesty and humour. Her passion for tea and cake, honesty and respect shine through, along with her secretary’s mistrust of skinny husband stealing girls 🤣
I admit I do make too many comments about my own fat 😖

Gentle suggestion - think of how things may have been different without the meds that lead you to put on weight - would you really have had as much additional quality of life from being a couple of stone lighter as you gained from being on the medication to help control a serious medical condition? Also - if you were more active at that stage, then in fact even with the extra weight you were almost certainly still “healthier” than you were at your lighter pre-meds weight. Talk kindly to your body - you wouldn’t turn to a best friend when reminiscing about those times and say to them “and you weren’t fat!” so why would you do it to yourself? (Also - fat - it’s a substance, not an insult! 😉)

I completely agree that being able to look back at a time that was particularly wonderful and balance up the fact that yes - it lead you to debt, but it was also amazing, so the benefits outweigh the costs. I have a few periods of time like that myself when I come to think about it - I definitely wouldn’t change the things I did but like you I wished I’d gained the knowledge of how to manage it better, sooner. The key thing is that we DO eventually gain that knowledge, see the foolishness of what came before, and tackle the situation, but above all, retain those lessons so we don’t dig ourselves back into the same holes in the future. 😁
Thank you for the wise words, much appreciated and very true :)

I do actually use fat as a descriptor - not an insult.  I'm trying to claim the word back   I can't deny it, I am fat.  I don't apologise for it, I'm not ashamed of it (though I would like to be less fat!), it's no one's business but mine.  It's my way of trying to accept who I am and recognise that I am not a lesser person because I am fat.  This is me and I have as much right to be here as anyone else.  I've been reading stuff from the body acceptance movement, and from health at every size.

It's a long, hard lesson for me, but one I've been working on for the last year or so.  However, I would never use the term to describe others as I know people don't see it the same way.  I don't pretend that there aren't health risks and issues from being fat, but equally I shouldn't spend my whole life waiting until I lose weight to live - and that has been an issue since I put on all the weight!

I flipping LOVE this! Body acceptance is SUCH a tricky one to get to grips with - and reclaiming the word fat as a descriptor in the same was we use think short, tall etc is such a powerful thing too. It’s refreshing that there are now so many more resources out there to help us find our way through it - it’s one thing I really like Instagram for (although like any social media platform there is still toxic content out there in the area for sure.)

I’m trying to navigate the anti diet-culture world too - and that’s also complex. Fortunately I’ve never had an eating disorder but I have suffered from disordered eating for years - I realised this fully about 4 years ago now and even this far in I’m still trying to pick my way through- it’s the reason why I’ll rarely engage with “diet talk” on here or elsewhere unless I see real nonsense being talked when I will try to gently call it out. Otherwise it’s simply less harmful to me to just scroll by. I really dislike the way people - and let’s be honest, it’s mostly women - are encouraged to feel that they are the ones at fault when yet another diet has failed to work for them - it’s never the diet that’s at fault, always the individual.

The HAES stuff is fascinating - again we’re so conditioned to see larger bodies as “unhealthy” without actually stoping to consider the stuff we can’t see it’s not surprising that there is so much weight stigma out there - it is frightening how often that prejudice clouds the treatment that is offered by medical professionals who should know better though! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Body acceptance is a good way forward. We're all told being overweight automatically means x, y and z and yet you see really large people outliving skinny ones so life is never quite that simple.

I do too.  They can't see that their hatred is just as bad as what they are protesting.  It's a horrid society when there can't be adult discussions about things.

I make comments about my fat too - but it's me owning it.

It is very hard, and I'm only starting really.  I agree about the way people are blamed for diets not working.  The HAES was a real eye opener for me - when I went for my health check a few years ago, the nurse couldn't believe how healthy I was - no problems with blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar (then), or anything considering I'd been this size for years.  The sugar thing is obviously catching up with me now, but I believe that is because of the lack of movement during covid.  Hopefully as I make small changes and move more, it might go back to 'normal'.

It really woke me up to the prejudice we face though - I get put off going to the doctors because everything gets blamed on my weight, regardless of the issue.  There's some interesting reading about the negative outcomes from fat being partly because people are reluctant to seek treatment for issues because of their weight, rather than solely caused by their weight.

Body acceptance is a good way forward. We're all told being overweight automatically means x, y and z and yet you see really large people outliving skinny ones so life is never quite that simple.
I agree, it's never that simple.  When you look at a lot of the risk factors, they are only increasing from a very small base, and so the overall risk for many conditions is still low, even if it is increased compared to a standard weight person.

My anaemia partly ended up undiagnosed for so long because I was tremendously reluctant to go to the Dr after it ALWAYS turning into a stand-off about them insisting they needed to weigh me and me insisting they didn’t. That was around 2015 - 2016 - and even at that stage I knew that scales/weight was a massively problematic issue for me - although as I said I’ve always escaped an eating disorder my relationship with food and my body was horrific - I was a prime candidate for all the “sugar is as toxic as cocaine” type nonsense that does the rounds, but thankfully there was always a bit of me that remained rational enough to remember that trying to completely cut out a food like that without solid reason (and medical supervision) wasn’t a great idea - otherwise I suspect I’d have ended up with orthorexia. So the whole “just hop onto the scales” conversation regardless of what I’d gone in about lead to me simply avoiding going at all costs, and fast forward to autumn 2017 and I found myself as an emergency admission to hospital with iron levels so low I should technically have been unconscious. 😬 So yes - I’ll wholeheartedly back up the viewpoint that weight stigma in the medical world can make people’s health worse the pan them carrying a bit of extra weight! (It’s almost entirely women that suffer from this too - my other half has NEVER been lectured about his weight at the GP’s in spite of also appearing “overweight” !)

Nice PADIng - I cashed out Prolific yesterday so added to my “Gym neutral fund” - it all helps!
