stellata, this is what worked for me when feeling low on motivation and feeling a bit down.
As others have said, be kind to yourself, give yourself permission to take time out and maybe come and join some of us in the tlc carriage of the EDT. I’m the one in the hot tub with a book.
When watching tv, during the ad breaks (or if no ad breaks put it on pause every 20 mins) I pick up one easy thing and deal with it ie a piece of junk mail etc which can go in recycling. Then I do the same in the next ad break. This makes me feel I am doing something and it gives me enough of a lift to try to pick up something more challenging in the next break.
I have started to arrange to meet a friend or neighbour for a short walk as part of my 2022 well-being goals. Being outside and getting the oxygen around my body helps me to feel better, plus a catch up with someone who is good to be around uplifts me. I don’t go far as I walk with crutches and am short on energy but it seems to really be helping. It has been easier to read rather than watch something on a screen since I have started this and I am only on my third week.
The other thing is that decluttering will take as long as it takes. I am on my third or fourth year now and that is ok. I can see it being more or less finished this year which I am very happy about. I would love to have done it faster but I can only do it with the resources I have (limited energy levels and mobility issues).Decluttering Awards: 🏅🏅15 -
Think everyone needs a hug round here today 🤗🤗🤗
Manged to drop the boxes of books off at the local Oxfam yesterday - after checking in with them on the phone and being told they didn't have parking round the back, I lugged the first box from the nearest car park (about a 10 minute walk on a good day...) to the store, only to be told I could just park up round the back 🙄 Wasn't even annoyed, just relieved I didn't have to carry more boxes across town. Also managed to return a pack of unopened flooring to Homebase from when DH did the kitchen so that's more stuff out of the house. Had a quick tidy around the living room last night but didn't actually clean any of it despite being covered in dust.
Today I've already stripped the bed and washed the sheets, plus a load of clothes washed and now drying too. After work I need to pop to the library to return a book and pick up another one whilst on my daily walk, and then the bedrooms need dusting and vacuuming. Have also made up my lunches for the rest of the week so I can just pull them from the fridge and reheat when needed.Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 201713 -
1. Write a daily To Do list - only 5 tasks.
2. Deal with Old Frogs & potential frogs ASAP but at least one on FROG Fridays.
3. Reduce/Restrict time watching TV and playing AB2 during daylight hours 😉
4. Continue to keep kitchen clean & tidy - before going to bed
Tuesday is another bright day - clear blue skies but so cold 🥶 heavy frost overnight which the sun is struggling to melt ☹️ Monday’s Tasks 4 & 5 are ticked off - wash load in & another recipe transposed to new notebook 🙂 Everyone is up & so is the heating 😉I am going to finish the cheerleading & then pick 5 tasks for today - MUST TRY HARDER 😉
What a nightmare Gem-gem 😱 I have learned something new - I always thought memory sticks were incorruptible 😬 but asked my DH & he said old age, magnets & cold were possible causes ☹️ Hopefully you will be able to find & restore everything you need 🤞
We are moving very fast ilovetea 😥 Friday, Saturday & Sunday can be designated planning & recharging Life Batteries days 🙂 Excellent decluttering 👏
Excellent decluttering TC77 👏 Thank you for reminding us that self care is often way more important & quite often harder than decluttering 👏🙂 & well done on resisting the lure of cheap but not suitable curtains - you deserve nice things 🙂
Great decluttering short_bird 👏 Well done on the NSDs & seignating Tuesdays as your spending day because there is something you like doing 👏🙂
Excellent decluttering charlie’s_tribe 👏
Great work in the garage shabbychic12 👏 Do you know anyone with a bigger car who could perhaps assist you with tip runs? 😉
TC77 I am sending lots of positive vibes that 2022 will be your year - progress will be made decluttering clothes, using up your stationery & thinning out your glass & crockery collections 👏🙂
vulpix sorry to hear that MiL is back in hospital ☹️
Sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time, stellata 😔 Plenty of good suggestions from TC77, GrannyKate, -taff, balabooberlies, Siebrie & bit_by_bit. All I will say is that you have lots of friends here (virtual I know) who will offer kind words & hugs. You have taken the first step by posting 👏 Now just take one day at a time & each day do something nice for yourself - it might be putting on your favourite song & having a jig or picking up your favourite book & reading for half an hour or even a small pamper session. Above all, give yourself permission to grieve. In the meantime I am sending hugs 🤗Thank you to TC77, GrannyKate, -taff, balabooberlies, Siebrie & bit_by_bit for your kind words - hopefully stellata will find something that helps 🤞
Excellent decluttering GrannyKate 👏 What an interesting way to tackle the 1p Savings Challenge 👏🙂
Thank you for sharing wort 👏 Sounds like a useful & interesting book & very MSE for borrowing rather than buying 👏 Hopefully you will share other useful tips 🙏 A very succinct comment from Marie Kondo - but definitely harder than she makes it sound 😱 More excellent observations - thank you for sharing 👏
Think of the joy when the porch is emptied -taff 🥳 Excellent decluttering 👏
Balabooberlies such a beautiful post & all the more potent for sharing your journey with us 👏 Hopefully it will help stellata. Btw excellent start on your decluttering 👏 and what a joyous find 🙂 I take it you will be making shepherds pie 😉
Sorry you are struggling Suffolksue & I am sending positive vibes to help you remember the things you did do with your DH 🙂
Siebrie, A very useful & specific task that hopefully stellata can tackle 🙂
Sounds like a very interesting book pollyanna_26 👏
Well done on finding your ‘why’, -taff 👏
Excellent decluttering bit_by_bit 👏 My admiration grows - getting the medical & financial information all typed up to help your SiL & DH & forestall further anxieties 😇
balabooberlies - remember you are “Bala The Brave” - you have got this 🙂
Well observed newlywed 👏 but playing devil’s advocate - it could be just the impetus someone needs to get them started. Great work on recognising that selling on fleabay was not for you 👏 Excellent decluttering especially decluttering electronic thieves of time 👏
florianatwobob, Finding the side conversation regarding feeding a family cheaply very interesting 🙂
Great idea -taff - even a few ££ would be helpful 👏
Well done Floss 👏
dollypeeps you were trapped in your DS’s room 😉 but a very successful decluttering project by the sounds of it 👏 As to tackling your DD’s room, perhaps the timer system would work?A very uplifting post, oceanspirit 🙂👏 Thank you for reminding stellata & the rest of us that a bit of tlc goes a long way 👏🙂
Hugs are always welcome ruby_eskimo & I agree that quite a few of our fellow declutterers could do with a few hugs 🤗 Shame you had to carry the first box of books to the Oxfam shop but great that you could park up round the back for the other boxes 🙂 The original person you spoke to was probably under instructions not to volunteer that there was a drop area 😉 Excellent work on decluttering & tidying & forward planning your lunches 👏 As to the dust, it needs to settle before it can dealt with 😉MrsSD 🏅🏅🏅 🌟 ⭐️ ⭐️I AM A STAR 🌟

😂😂😂😂@Mrs_Salad_Dodger…
yes quite possibly the timer method may work……as long as it was attached to a bomb !!!!
I am thinking along the lines of taking everything out of her wardrobe and only allowing what fits and what she really loves to go back in there…..she really does have emotional attachments to some stuff ….to some extent I can empathise but I am growing a little exasperated ( keeping hold of ring binders she used in college🤷♀️🤦♀️) …
In the past I’ve said for her to keep it in the attic but truthfully this isn’t helpful at all…it just delays making a decision…
Anyway we will plod on …..and on…..and onGrocery spends £193.44/ £70 per week or £303 per month12 -
After my DD died ( 11yrs ago now) and before my DH was even ill ,I said to DS that I was aware he was the only one left to clear up after us and I would start sorting things out .
We had moved 40 miles here to help DD with her v young children ( her husband was and is hopeless) so there had been v little sorting before we came .
During that time I had also had to help my brother sort out and sell my mothers house 60 miles away and get her into a home .
My son’s response was ‘Don’t worry Mum ,I’ll just get a skip’!
this has made me look at lots of things with different eyes .I.e would I want them to go in a skip or would it be better to let them go to a charity now .since DH died last year ,I have been even more selective as to what I keep .I have no illusions that DS will go through things slowly ,!
I would also love a tidy easy to clean bungalow!
My sister in law’s reaction differs ,she has three children and says she will keep her treasures and it’s up to them what they do afterwards .
Her sons say they will just do what their elder sister tells them😀😀16 -
