  • Having had a £100k lump sum that we were pretty cautious with and needed to make it count, I am assuming the amounts would be windfalls not earnt and not nearly died for.

£10k - tidy the house up, sort the fencing out in the garden.

£20k - as above + some travelling next year

    £50k - above + top up ISA's and the children's savings

£100k as above but fill the children's JISA's put the rest towards a house move.

£500k move to forever home, put away decent house deposits for each of the children anything left would be split between fun and investments

Hmm second thoughts I'd still be cautious and practical however I came by money

£10k - Ooh! Maybe £1k each for my children to invest or save (driving lessons? LISA?) Maybe a family holiday and £5k into my (not quite started yet) SIPP. It would feel like lots of treats.

£20k - Wow! £1k each for my children and a family holiday. And then £15k towards a mortgage deposit. Hoping I can get a big enough deposit together to buy my first home by the time I'm 52.

£50k - Is it enough for a deposit? I think it could be. Forget the kids, forget the holiday, I could be on the path to actually having a safe and permanent home.

£100k - Comfortably enough for a deposit with no big increase in monthly (rent to mortgage) outgoings.

£500k - The dream. My own home, with nice curtains and carpets and solar panels and furniture and an electric charging point. An electric car. And £1k each for my children, and a family holiday. And instead of paying £1000 a month rent I'd be putting that into SIPP with the hope of bringing retirement age forward. It would be lifechanging.

£20k - as above plus a couple of new windows.
£50k - as above plus newish car.
£100k - as above plus DH could retire a year earlier.
