Utility Point to Cease Trading

  • I’m as much in the dark about this situation as many others but re the DD cancel or not choice.

Will Utility Point REALLY continue to take DDs when they have already ‘ceased trading’?!
What will happen to that money? Will they pass it on to the solr or keep it for their bankruptcy even though those funds are taken post ceasing trading? Does not make sense. If they can continue to take debits they must still be in business?

Does that mean they can also process my refund they promised me? Their website can now be viewed again and to all intents and purposes looks like a company still in business, there nothing there to say it’s gone bust! Shall I arrange for a smart meter now and take out boiler insurance? Is the regulator ofgem involved yet. I’ve heard nothing apart from mse, bbc news and this thread.

Direct debits have to be requested a few days before they go out of an account, so it should not be too surprising if this happens in the first few days after a company ceases trading. The other activity you are seeing is almost certainly just automated systems carrying on as they have not been told to stop.

Credit balances are protected, but it's obviously a good idea to make sure you have a record of what you have paid so make sure you retain bank statements, but I'm sure you would do this in any case.

We have left UP in June with £180 credit, still haven't got it back. And they have also taken 3 more DD's after we have left - which we didn't notice until they went bust so can't claim those DD's from the bank under the DD guarantee. In total over £400. So I hope this credit is also protected.
@Ivik did your bank tell you that when you asked them to reverse the DDs, or are you assuming it? Because it's definitely worth asking.
@QrizB Hi, yes, my bank told me that they cannot reverse the DD's as the company is no longer trading.

A few years back I managed to get some DD's reversed after IRESA went bust - I bank with Nationwide

Can't remember what justification I used to convince them now unfortunately

I think part of it is who you get on the other end of the phone line - you can get a different result depending on who you speak too
  • I’m also with Utility Point- my DD went out yesterday.  My tariff also needed renewing tomorrow so I renewed to a cheaper tariff with them.  It was only when i requested my credit by emailing them that i found out they have ceased trading.

So, I’d already renewed my tariff and am owed a credit,  what do I do?

I’ve cancelled my DDs from now on.

The tariff renewal is now irrelevant as you'll be put on the deemed contract with the new supplier. Any credit you have is protected and will be transferred to the new supplier in due course.

  • Thanks Spot.  Do we know when we will be likely to hear?  Days/Weeks/Months?

Just logged in and entered my meter readings - seems that the website is working again now.

It isn't a quick process. The only experience I have is when Yorkshire Energy went bust last December, and I think it was a couple of months before my account with them was finalised and the balance transferred to the SOLR (Scottish Power in that case). However if you want to move on you can do so before that. Just wait until your supply is shown as transferred on the national database.

I wonder if the deemed contract starts the day the new supplier is appointed ? (rather than September 14th)
    - if so then it would be advisable to provide a meter read on that date as well as September 14th

With the GNE to EDF transfer customers were placed on a temporary new GNE tariff (I think from the date EDF were appointed)  until EDF could arrange the transfer (which was months later) - the temporary new GNE tariff being the same as the EDF tariff

this is a useful link to see who your current supplier is
https://www.findmysupplier.energy/webapp/index.html (obviously still UP at the moment)
