I can't think of many reasons why anyone would use lots of cash these days, particularly in Covid times,  and the few reasons I can think of are all transactions I am not engaging in. I do appreciate though that for some these are essential ......
When I was in US, paying for things on my card where a tip was required didn't work well with the American system. I didn't take any cash with me. Got some appalling looks and friend with cash stepped in. Next time I go abroad I'd want to be able to withdraw just a small amount of fee-free cash using either Chase, Starling or whatever else.
Some people are almost aggressive if you don't tip. I always keep dollar notes on hand.

The whole tipping system with cards at restaurants as well I find bizarre. They bring over the bill, you give them the card, they go and scan it and give you a piece of paper where you have to say how much of a tip you are giving and then sign it. I hate the tipping culture.
  • Update datapoint: I have now used my Chase card in two different EU country, and the overall experience has been great for both ATM and paying for purchases. In addition I have earned cash-back in the process (at 1% is double what I would have earned with My Forex free legacy MBNA Horizon, that being a VISA also offer worst off exchange rate in comparison to MC - BTW you can use a Credit Card like Santander Zero to put the Hold on the account for both Hotels and Car rental, but then ask to finalise the payment on the Chase card at check out /car return). CS over chat and over the phone has been stellar, and thus made me decide to finally close my Starling account (CS is ridiculous in comparison) as Chase has effectively substituted it for its main purpose for me. Fineco UK is my main personal multi currency account to transfer money fee-free between Euro and GBP (exchange rate may look a tad worst off on the face of it but as there are 0 fees, the actual exchanges money credited in the new currency have been always higher then both Starling and Wise).

It's a different culture - as long as you accept that (unlike an oblivious/cheap English couple who were virtually chased down the street in NY for not giving a tip) I budget for circa 10% for a tip and 10% tax to any US restaurant price and never had any issues.

Some US states also include the tip as part of their minimum wage level - which I personally find distasteful.

May I ask you if you have used Chase USA local ATM and thus were not charged any ATM fees? This was yet to be confirmed

    The 2 Dec rate was 1GBP = 1.3243 USD
Brilliant! March in California should be even better now (as far as I am allowed to go)

The card was declined once, and that was in a craft fair where the person had a little card reader device attached to their iPad. I asked Chase and they said they don't support mag stripe transactions. The person did insert the card chip into the little reader (ie as far as I know they didn't try to use the non-existent mag stripe on the Chase card) but maybe whatever they are using makes it look like a mag stripe transaction. Someone on here may know the tech details.

Chase UK is a registered bank at Companies House and with the Prudential Regulation Authority. The debit card is defined as UK issued card by Mastercard. I'm not sure where 'iWeb' s view' comes into it. It's poor administration by iWeb - plain & simple.
