In my mind they are direct debits but using the card number rather than the account number and bank sort code.

Those are known as a Continuous Payment Authority rather than a Direct Debit. Two very different things.

Online groceries, and most likely also airline tickets, would typically be one-off debit card payments, even if you make those purchases frequently. They are neither a Direct Debit nor a Continuous Payment Authority.

Broadband is typically a Direct Debit.

Streaming TV could be a Continuous Payment Authority or a Direct Debit.

    Thanks both for your corrections.

I have done a few dozen over the last few days and cannot remember.  Do many offer the choice of direct debit or credit/card debit card numbers?

If so, I’m going to need to go back and look …

    Thanks.

My question wasn’t about exclusions. What I meant are those web sites where they request your debit card number for all future purchases.

These are continuous payment authorities or recurring payments.

    MSE say the following:

Recurring payments (also called continuous payment authorities – CPAs) feel like direct debits but aren't.

And as wiseonesomeofthetime says, it will earn cash back as long as it is not on the exclusion list.

Has anyone asked  for and received a second debit card for a spouse? I cannot see how to do this.

I twice asked them using the online but having waited they keep telling me I can’t have a joint account …….. :(

You cannot have a second card.  The way round this is for one (or both) of you to add the card to gpay/Apple pay and the other one can carry the card.

Another option is to get a free Curve card, add Chase to that and then you can have a card each

Both options will be most likely be breaking some terms and conditions.

Not legally. Only the named account holder can use the debit card so a second debit card could only be a replacement with the original being cancelled.

    A few offer both.
And apologies if you know this, but the easy way to tell the difference:

Direct debits require 6 digit sort code and 8 digit account number

Debit (and credit) card payments ask for the 16 digit card number and expiry date,  and usually the 3 digit CVV number.

Is anyone having issues with debit card payments today? They have gone through ok at the shops I’ve been in. However one I made at lunchtime today has only just come off my available balance and showing on my transaction list. And the transaction I made in Asda 2 hours ago is not showing on my account at all as yet, again not reflecting on my available balance.

Not me, as I had a zero spend day today! Also haven't had problems myself before but I have seen one or two reports like yours recently.

Generally speaking, it can always happen that your bank balance doesn't update instantly. It could be because of processing issues at the bank, but more likely the issue is at the retailer who, for one reason or another, has been unable to report the sale to your bank instantly. Their internet connection could be down, their backend processing could have stopped, they might batch up transactions before they send them to the bank, and so on.
