Says on the guidance that as soon as you supplier contacts you, you can switch.

British gas emailed me on the 10/09/21 with the following:

As of 10th September you became our customer, welcome to the British Gas family.

I assume I should be able to switch with no issues, no?

I have also received a e-mail from British Gas saying we have taken over your supply, Ofgem advise not to switch yet, but with prices going up on 1st Oct can I switch/should I switch now not knowing what to compare with ( no mention of what tariff i will be on from British Gas),
Check ‘Who is my supplier’. If BG is not listed as your current supplier any attempt to switch will probably fail because there is a transfer in progress.

After cancelling my DD with PFP as I noticed other people have. I got an email from them today asking for me to reinstate it. As I always end up making the wrong decision do I ignore the Mail. Or reinstate? But as they have gone bust, have a large credit with them and BG are taking over can’t see the point!
I called them yesterday. They told me to ignore the automated email.

I contacted them by email to moan about the £12 "penalty charge" they applied to my account for cancelling my direct debit (5 days after they went bust!) and recived this back from them

"Please keep your direct debit active as you are still using energy. This will prevent any large catch up bills during the switch over and any potential charges British Gas may charge without having this in place. If you contact us to reset your direct debit up as your terms and conditions we can waiver the 12 fee"

So I called the number in the email only to be told that they can't set up any direct debits as they have ceased trading, and they would leave a note on the account for BG to refund the £12.

i never got a reply to my email !
  • I decided to cancel my DD, and this evening decided to check to see if a £12 charge has been added (so far not).
My account is £40 in debit.
My account  now says this payment is overdue (though the DD isn’t due until the end of the month).
I’m wondering now if I should pay the £40 online or wait until British Gas/the administrator asks for it. Any thoughts?

Personally, if I was in your position I wouldn't pay a penny more to PfP. I would wait for the SoLR to issue a bill and pay then.

I started a switch to Octopus from PFP on Sat 11th, checked this morning with Octopus who confirmed both fuels have now been accepted and my supply start date will be 28th. Also checked with British Gas who advised they will monitor my switch and not object, there's been no objections received from PFP either.

That's good to hear. My transfer to Green, also started on the 11th, seems to be going normally, so far. I took the precaution of submitting a meter reading to PfP, backed up with a photo, on the same date.

    Fingers firmly crossed.
Green today ceased new signups... https://green.energy/join/unavailable - I'm hoping this doesn't mean we're about to get a new "has ceased trading" thread...

Same here. Just an autoreply saying they had ceased trading! But not so ceased they can't charge you £12 penalty charge!

Whats the betting they will take another £12 next month if we are still in limbo with BG!

    If it isn't one thing...

Looking on the brighter side, Green are probably being responsible and not taking on any more new customers because they haven't got enough bought-forward energy to service them.

    Fingers, eyes and toes crossed.
  • British Gas are putting PfP customers (direct debit and quarterly billing) onto the Price Promise Apr 2022 tariff. Prices for my area are -

    Gas 3.987p / kWh standing charge 26.123p / day
Elec 20.317p kWh standing charge 23.777p / day

Looks like I can save money by splitting my gas and electric suppliers, I'm thinking of trying Octopus Go and whoever is cheapest for gas at whatever point we're able to switch away from British Gas.

    What a mess.
