Couple of spends to declare - £5 on milk , eggs and squash. Learnt that co0p is 45p dearer than sainsbo’s for 2 pints which was a surprise. Had to shop around for free range eggs, there were no eggs at all in the first shop I went to.
then £9 in Mozza’s today on a few onions, garlic, snacks for children at school, tinned soup etc.
So I’m at £238.59/300 . Quite impressed with how we’ve done to be honest as some months recently when I totted up spending it went as high as £550 - that was online supermarket deliveries and generally overspending unecessarily. Because I’ve had a lean pay month it has forced us to see if £300 is doable and while it has required more thinking and planning , so far it hasn’t been too hard and we have plenty of stores remaining.
going to try and keep to £300 (and even reduce) next month so I can put the savings towards a new kitchen next year. Got to save about £400 a month towards that if I’m to avoid getting into debt.

  • Spent £10.52 in lids this afternoon, which wasn't bad but there were a few things I couldn't get, namely pack if 4 toilet rolls, milk and the crackers I like, but I'm in no real hurry for them really.
elsiepac - I think I will start doing it weekly as I get paid Wednesday and there's another week left for September, so it will be £15 a week, it'll make it easier I think.

  • Hello all, I spent £4.90 in Mr T on f/f greek style yoghurt, pitta bread, baton, tzatziki and s&v crisps but have realised that my last listed spend in M*rks included £10 for flowers which I had previously decided to allocate to a separate budget so overall that means I should take £5.10 off my total.
That makes my new total £90.66/£120 and my average daily spend is £4.53.

Thank you for the happiness soup recipe @goldfinches - I'm not that great at following recipes and don't add starch to food as I am too fat, but that soup sounds good.

My basic courgette soup is quite flexible -

    • 2 onions,
    • 2 carrots,
    • the middle of a head of celery if I froze it chopped
    • 1 small sweet potato
    • All peeled, chopped to a fairly small dice (the same size) and sautéed in sunflower oil with the lid on for about five minutes.
    • Then add a large zip lock bag of prepped squash (or dice 3 largish courgettes) or you can use butternut, or tromboncino, or pumpkin,
    • cover it with water, add a veg stock cube/pot, a pinch of salt (optional) about a teaspoon of mixed herbs (I use thyme, basil, mint and oregano as my mix) and half a teaspoon of lazy chilli.
    • Cover the pan once it comes to the boil and simmer for 25 minutes with the lid on. Leave to stand for about 30 minutes then whizz with a stick bender until it is smoothish.
    • If I have it, I drizzle on cream, or top of the milk and a pinch of salt flakes to serve

Groceries - Sept  Groceries Challenge     £87.62 of £170

This is low as I have been away for 9 days of the month with food provided.

I have a Holland + B subscribe and save on protein shake  just delivered £23.75 and the 5th one is free..  - looking at it at 27.14p per serving )  - at 70 servings in there  - I tend to use 1.5 servings each time so 40.71p across the 5   - it is a very cheap and healthy snack - I had not looked at the cost previously but ...even though I add linseed, chia seeds, MCT oil and frozen berries - much better for me than junk food! So more vegan protein shake - less sweets and crisps!

    Sept  NSD 6/10           - could be 7...

    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

  • My month has now ended and I spent most of what was left on Christmas pressies for dgc, so a start made.

I now have £15 a week which runs from 22/9 - 28/9, I think it's easier to do weekly as I'm paid every four weeks.
