WD40..............or similar0

Any organic solvent will do - petrol (emptied from garden equipment at the end of the year, for instance), paraffin, lamp oil, white spirit, meths, nail varnish remover. The solvent used in aerosols to keep contents, e.g. furniture wax, liquid will also work.
Avoid nail varnish remover on plastic however, as it will soften or dissolve it.
Wash with washing up liquid afterwards.0 -
Does anyone know of a way to get the sticky sticky glue of off wine bottles please?
I have two demijohns of red wine on the go, just from a tin (hope to do the real stuff in berry season thou!) and I salvages half a dozen brown / green wine bottles from my neighbour's recycling boxes before the bin men came this morning. I left them soaking in soapy water for a couple of hours and expected the labels to float off. Most have, but two bottles were harder and I had to scrub the softened label off with a sponge. Both have left a really sticky glue on the bottle. I have tried with washing up liquid and a sponge and with a brillo pad, but the sticky just won't budge. Any ideas please? SG0 -
I soak the whole bottle in very hot soapy water and scrub the remainder of the adhesive with a green scourer.
Might be worth trying nail varnish remover or a hairdryer to melt the glue? Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Yep
Oil.
Any old cheapy cooking oil will do the trick. Let it soak in for a while and then a (usually light - depends on the adhesive used) go over with a pan scrubber will finish the job.
Also - if you are using an old bottle or container to be filled as a gift - this will also remove the "use by date" ink from them as wellHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hi, ive heard WD40 is good for getting sticky stuff off.0

Dry the bottles, spray with furniture polish, leave for a couple of minutes and the glue should just rub off. Some bottles are harder than others, but this should work.

Hi sunset gold,
There's an earlier thread on getting labels off, with lots of tips so I've added your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

any essential oil will take it off really easily.....smells nice too!!0

Put hot water in the bottle: the heat softens the glue and the label doesn't get wet. Any remainder can be dissolved with (as above) WD-40 or Stardrops. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0
