I always stand the jars in a saucepan of water for the day. Then they scrub off easily with a scourer. I do this before I put them in the dishwasher otherwise you get bits of paper in the filter. I have given up on trying to re use jars that strong smelling stuff like pickles come in as I can never get rid of the smell completely. I have tried washing up liquid, star drops, and bicarb.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I have a large number of old jam and honey jars that I am preparing for a jam making session. I want them to look nice so I can give them as presents. But some of the labels leave a residue of the glue/gum behind on the glass. Any OS ways of cleaning this off? Also despite overnight soaking some of tha actual labels are really difficult to get off. Is it just a question of scraping them off with a knife?

Not really OS but if you squirt a bit of WD-40 onto the residue and wait for a minute or two, it will wipe right off.:happylove0

surgical spirit on cotton wool will get it off, as will any alcohol in fact.0

Try this older thread: Cleaning adhesive from bottle and jar labels.
I use a metal scouring pad - takes the goo off, without scratching the glass.
