sticky label and residue removal

Apologies if there's already a thread about this somewhere!
I've been given lots of jam jars which I'm going to use for making jam and chutney in the next week or two. They all still have their labels and I'm wondering if there's an easy way to remove them. Apart from soaking them in soapy water and scrubbing the life out of them, does anyone know of a better way?0 -
Thats pretty much what I do, soak for a few hours in hot soapy water, peel off what I can then take a soap filled brillo pad to it (not the lids though. I have yet to find a better way of doing it
I find this better than sticky stuff remover as the smell lingers for a very long time with that0 -
Hi angeltreats,
I do exactly the same as floyd. If there is a little residue that I find difficult to remove I somtimes spray it with WD40 and it comes off very easily.
This earlier thread has more ideas:
sticky label removal
I'll add your thread to it later to keep the suggestions together.

If floyd's suggestion doesn't work (as it usually does to be honest), I put them in the dishwasher and just clear the drain of the labels when it is finished. Usually even the most stubborn labels wash off eventually as the water is so hot. If it doesn't work the first time, I leave them in for another go.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Try heating the label with a hair dryer on its highest setting, this should melt the glue on the back of the label and you should then be able to peel it off in one go. Then use the WD-40 trick to remove the sticky residue.0

I've used nail polish remover before and then chucked them in the dishwasher.
Did stink a bit thoughWhether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0 -
I do the dishwasher thing also, but I take them out before it dries them, as it can just dry them back on if they haven't fell off.2 angels in heaven :A0

You lucky lot with your dishwashers! My husband is our dishwasher and I don't think he'd like it if I inserted jam jars into him.
I'll try soaking the labels off and scrubbing, and a bit of WD40 on any stubborn bits. They're Bonne Maman jars and don't look like they'll be too hard to remove anyway.

I always soak and then use furniture polish to get rid of the last bits,
works a treat xxx0 -
Hi Folks
Does any one have any handy hints for getting really sticky labels off jars please? I have made a huge batch of jam and intend to make more at the weekend but the jars I have left look really tatty. I have soaked them in warm soapy water, they have been through the dishwasher twice. Have tried lemon juice and vinegar! Nothing seems to budge the damn things. I am now left with a furry matted mess on the front! Any hints will be very much appreciated!0
