  • Again, big apologies for being an ignorant newbie! :o

No worries, but take a look at this thread on how to start out Old Style. It'll give you lots of tips and hints ;)

I'll add this to the thread that zippy links to to keep ideas together.

  • Many thanks, Penny!

What wonderful ideas! I ended up using zippychick's suggestion of nail varnish remover (as OH's stash of WD40 is at his parents house) and tried someone else's suggestion of furniture polish for the really stubborn ones, both of which worked an absolute treat! I've now got over a dozen label/glue free wine bottles! Well chuffed! :j Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

I'm hoping some of you guys could help me with this.

My flatmate and I have recently moved into a new flat just over a month ago, we noticed last week that there was an awful smell from the kitchen bin, I took it all apart and scrubbed it. It was fine, for 6 days and then the smell was back. This smell is horrible, not a "normal" bin smell.

We were confused about where it was coming from but then I realised last night that the lid smells so much worse so I think that's the problem. There is a sticker on the lid which the landlord has obviously tried to take off when he got the bin and failed so it was still sticky. I think what has happened is the food/smell from the bin has stuck to the sticker... does that even sound plausible or just daft? :rotfl:

If it is, then I'll need to get that sticker off. The bin isn't new so it's been there a while and isn't sticky anymore. Just wondering if anyone would know the best way to try and get it off? It's a good bin so don't really want to throw it if we don't have to.

    Thanks! :D

I think that sounds plausible... With regards to getting the label off you could try something like nail polish remover - that's what I use with stubborn sticky patches...

Thanks, I could get some polish remover on the way home. I do have some white spirit, would that do the job?

White spirit will probably work - I used it to get all the gaffer tape residue off my stuff

    Hi Drea

There is a whole thread about sticky label removal. Ill add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

try WD40, nail varnish remover, white spirit or baby oil and a scraper - what ever you have without having to buy something unless you have to :D (all tried and tested and successful)

    Other threads which may help

    My kitchen bin still smells

    Musty smell in cupboards

    smelly spilt milk

They should give you enough ideas to remove the smell also. I would try lemon juice, then bicarb first probably :)

Let us know how you get on

    thanks:)

Mayonaise(sp?) is great for getting sticky labels of things. All you need to do is smother it over the label and leave it for a couple of hours. The label should scrape off with ease...its the oil apparentley. Got the tip from "how clean is your house?"! I have used it to get stickers of the fridge and light fittings that the kids have put on and it worked really well.
