  • Our resident hedgehog was out and about in the garden last night and I wondered if he should be hibernating. We're as far south as you can get so it's reasonably mild, but it still seems a bit early.
  • Hello Nannyg and friends :)
We stopped getting hedgehog visitors around the middle of November and assumed they were hibernating. Then a couple of days before Christmas one turned up and has been visiting ever since. Some days she stays in our hedgehog house. She was quite a small hog when she started coming but is no longer :D
We have also had another bigger hog who visited once last week but not since.
We have a cat proof feeder for them with a camera on it so we can see what they are doing. Eating and a shoving match if there's more than one! Love watching them :)
Hope you are well Nannyg. It's raining so much here I'm wondering if we'll need a boat to go out tomorrow.

Please put out food and water for the birds and hedgehogs :)

Oh, this makes me wish I had hedgehog visitors! I miss see them (remembering them all the time when I was growing up). East London feels rather unkind for hedgehogs.

Hello everyone, sorry I haven't been on for a couple of days, just not doing very much and staying in.

joedenise - oh I'm glad somebody agrees with me about the sourdough and yes WinterWarrior lashing of butter certainly helps to take the taste away lol.

All the hedgehog talk makes me so jealous!!!! When I moved in here it wasn't built up and we used to have a family of hoggies every year, but since more houses have been built etc they seem to be disappearing. There is still at least one  about though because the year before last we had a bit of excitement next door as one had fallen down their patio steps and had to be rescued, so my neighbour built a hog house for him to hibernate in which he did and bought proper 'hog' food for him etc and he does come into my garden sometimes in the summer. My ex used to take in baby hogs that people found to fatten them up before releasing as they have to be a certain weight to last the winter hibernation, and was locally known as the 'hedgehog man', I don't think people knew his real name lol.

Well I managed to make my lemon cake, a nut and honey granola, twinks and three roast dinners!!!! The lemon cake isn't up to my usual standard but is still getting eaten, the granola is lovely, which usually happens when I just throw everything in and rejections - well you can't go wrong with them. I'm taking some of each up to dds tomorrow as its grandma duty day, and I have dgd there as well, mind you I probably won't see too much of her as she loves drawing and playing on her tablet, so I'll have to organise a couple of games for all of us to do together.

I was at the dentist for a check up this morning and I'm in the clear for another 9 months, and then hopefully yearly!!! It's been every 6 months for years and usually costs a packet.

Called in mossers as it was near the dentist for some milk and butter and I was good, I didn't go into the cafe or buy a magazine (or chocolate!). And that's about it, so I will love you and leave you. I hope everyone has survived the three storms we've just had, the last one that finally blew itself out this afternoon was the worse one for us, but besides trees being blown down, only a little flooding and road closures we have got off really lightly, having said that I didn't sleep well last night as it was quite worrying and the noise ....

Thanks for calling in, I will try harder on the cake making next time.

Just got in from grandma duties and had a lovely day, it went really quickly to.

Anyway didn't go out anywhere as the weather was cold and showery, so we hunkered down, read books, watched a bit of tv and generally talked and played games. Managed plenty of puppy cuddles, he's growing quickly and I forget he's not a year old yet so will probably grow some more there are still a few food problems but dd Is persevering until she finds the right combination.

I haven't spent any dosh, so purse hasn't been opened and hopefully won't be until after the weekend. Not sure what my plans are for the next few days but I must get on with some cleaning and I've been informed that the cover on my poly tunnel at the lottie is no more!! I've been putting off buying a replacement for the last few years :)

That's about it for now, teas cooked, coffees made so I'll go and eat.

SuperMoose reporting for lemon cake eating duties :D
It's good to hear about hedgehog man. We found a baby hog out in the day a couple of years ago and took her to hedgehog woman :) to be looked after until she was big enough to be released.
Our hedgehog ate 135g of food last night which is a lot for such a small animal. I guess there's very little natural food for her at the moment.
Very jealous of puppy cuddles, he sounds lovely.
Sorry to hear about your polytunnel cover. Is it easy to get replacements? I know you can get replacement covers for the small greenhouses. Is it a big polytunnel? I remember reading an article several years ago about a man who lived in a polytunnel. He grew all his fruit and veg around him :)
Went out this afternoon as the rain had stopped to go to the library as I had several ordered books to collect. Did some food shopping and avoided buying chocolate like you.
    Enjoy your evening :)

Please put out food and water for the birds and hedgehogs :)
  • Hello NannyG, hope you don't mind me popping in and saying hi! I've been reading your diary in the background.

You are one resourceful lady, always looking on the bright side and an amazing mum/Nanny. You have many similarities to my mum and I'm guessing a similar age.

I also have an allotment though not ventured down there after the storms. Plus I and the family were away in the West Country on a long weekend. Even braved the seafronts in wind and rain but lovely to have a break.

    Fizz x

  • Hello Nannyg, we have an allotment faceache group and there were several casualties last weekend, not least my shed that took a flying leap over the neighbour's fence!  I've been to rescue the contents which surprisingly did not move very far, but waiting for all these storms to all pass on before calling out the cavalry.  I hope you get your polytunnel sorted.

SuperMoose - I should b able to buy a new cover, I just have to research it a bit. It's 3x2 metres, so big enough for me to house tom's, cucs, aubergines and chilled in the summer and kale etc in the winter. (Plus weeds of course!!)

I love dds puppy as I looked after him for a few months when he was younger, they had a lot on, a new house and it was only meant to be a week or two!!!! I loved having him and was very sad to let him go back!!!

At my library you have to pay 50p a book to order them in, I only did it once! It was nearly cheaper to buy them for the kindle - as you can tell I wasn't impressed, I didn't realise it was so high just for one book, I'm not against paying something, I just thought it a little steep.

I asked my next door neighbour if the hog was still there, and it is but he says it's going out walking at night, but coming back to sleep, so he/she may have babies sometime, hopefully :)

Fizz2015 - you're brave going on the seafront, I'm not a lover of wind! I live nearly in the middle, so it's a toss up whether you go west or east, I must admit I tend to west into lovely Wales, it's easier to get to.

I haven't been onto the lottie yet, our committee lets everyone know what's happening, we are a smaller site and most people are very helpful, so I'm hoping I can get some help to take the cover off, it's already been nursed through a fair few years so it doesn't really owe me anything. I went into hb's this morning and after deciding I wasn't growing any potatoes this year, caved in and bought some Charlottes-I can't help myself :)
