The latter , if MCOL claim history says it's been posted ? Or wait if it's not been posted , until it's in the post

You should be following the 12 numbered steps by coupon mad in the Defence template post , where this is already explained !!

Clearly you are not following them , so are only halfway through
Actually RedX, I am following them, I'm just looking for reassurance that where it says the following, I should just be waiting to receive the N180, not taking any other action:

After sending off your Defence, the Northampton Business centre will send a copy to the Claimant, and then send a Directions Questionnaire (form N180) to both Claimant and Defendant.

Whether this is via the post or email, I don't appear to have had anything, however the CCBC must have sent the N180 to the claimant so I can't understand why i would not have received it yet if that was the case.
You don't need reassuring because we are all telling you to follow each and every one of those steps , to save answering the question with the same reply, due to the sheer amount of queries on here ! We are posting on dozens of discussions , you are only participating in one , your own !

The CCBC do not send the N180 to the claimant , you do !! , when you email it to the ccbcaq email address , one email , 2 destinations

The CCBC sent your DEFENCE to the claimant , not the N180 , Claimants get one anyway and tend to fill in a pro Forma pdf that they already obtained

I suggest you carefully read the processes again , because you appear to be in a muddle

It feels a bit like you miss the fact that as first-timers, we're uncertain, we have never done this before and so need some reassurance from time to time. If replying to my questions means you have to answer condescendingly, please don't reply.

I have never done it before either ! Never had a private PCN nor a court claim for that matter , but I am very good at research and following instructions , plus never making assumptions

Better that you get told now rather than picking up the pieces later after a fiasco like quite a few we see on here , some within the last fortnight ( we are not here to applaud your every move but to point you want advice and point out any mistakes , before a judge does )

That's all we (newbies) can ask. I suppose what I'm saying is please just consider that it's a nerve-wracking experience, so be kind, be patient and hopefully we can chalk up a win at some point!

Which is why my replies focus on the error's , mistakes and misconceptions surrounding the topic , because we know that newbies don't take it all onboard and often need correcting ( emotions and feelings play no part in a court claim , only criticism and detachment )

I am quite sure that it is nerve wracking , after being here for 8 years advising people and learning for myself in the process , which is why you need critical crystal clear clarity when you are wrapped up in it , a cold hard look from outside is often what is required , my opinion was that you needed that in order to put you on the right course and not being another Titanic ( iceberg ? What iceberg ?? Is it a real iceberg ? There is only a small amount of ice above the waves ! Are you sure we need a lifebelt on ? )

I have received the N180 from the other side although I don't appear to have received a N180 form to complete myself. Is this normal or should I be finding the form online to complete myself? I just want to make sure I don't miss a deadline.

    Here's the re-assurance you need...
That's from the list that @Redx reminded you about.   ;)

Now received the N180 through the post too - the one I emailed in doesn't appear to have been lodged on MCOL (would it have been?), so shall I just complete and send this postal N180 back to the courts and claimant as well?

No, just email it to both then it can't get lost.  Yes it should have been updated on MCOL.  You could phone the CCBC.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

You should have received an auto generated email receipt back from the CCBC ! Did you ?

If not , if you used a Gmail account , try an alternative like Hotmail , emailing it again to both the CCBC and claimants lawyer ( or claimant if no lawyer ) , checking for the auto email receipt back from the CCBC

It's ALWAYS important to check for receipt , not just submission , submission does not prove that it was received , the auto email receipt does that !
