I am amazed because I thought this was a money saving website. Just spent a good hour reading through this thread to see people opting for more expensive 18 month contracts when the 24month is cheaper.

People need to smell the coffee that smartphones come at a higher price.

Rule of thumb to remember is that if an 18 month contract is the same price as a 24 month contract then of course that latter would be cheaper because for those 6 months you would get the line rental paid for. It's such a false economy to think that paying for a lesser contract would equal better value because it simply doesn't, as after the 18months people will then take out another contract at a higher fee.

    anyways....

I am out of contract with 3 because of poor coverage. Managed to get hold of an orange staff discount code for a blackberry 9780 for under £20 a month....cheaper than a sim only.

Well people do the maths always and find its cheaper over 18 mths, especially since in 18mths there would be many new smartphones in the market and hence can change 6 mths earlier than in 24mth contract.. simples :D
  • Hi,

I'm new to the forums at MSE.com but have benefitted from the posts in this forum so thought it is only fair that I state my recent upgrade offer.

    I have been offered:

Free Desire HD (or any phone of my choice, except for the Iphone)
    18 months
    1000 minutes
    Unltd texts
    Unltd Internet (500 mb)
    Orange Maps
    30 photo messages
    6 Magic numbers
£25 per month (inclusive of VAT).

I was offered Orange Care for an additional £3.50 per month. I currently pay the £6 per month for it. Then, when the lady was processing my order, she said she could knock it down to £2 per month (I didnt ask, she just offered). I then cheekily tried to ask if the Orange Care could be included in my line rental but she said that it couldnt although I could cancel the Orange Care later if I changed my mind. I tried to push for a fair usage of 750mb instead of the photo messages or magic numbers (I dont really send photos and only one of my closest mates is on Orange) but was unsuccessful and am not too worried about it.

I am pleased with this offer. I had spoken to Orange before but was told that I could only upgrade to the "high value" phones such as the Desire HD or HTC 7 Mozart if my line rental went up (and without some of the items listed above).

I am contemplating selling the Desire HD on Ebay at some point and then buying a sim free iphone and cutting my sim to fit into it with a sim cutter although I have not decided this yet - I might fall in love with the Desire HD !

My advice - be patient, do your research (e.g. I knew I was band 5 and also looked into other upgrade offers on the net including on this forum), and be friendly - I spoke to a female, was a little flirty but also assertive if she was offering something which fell short of what I wanted. Like all retailers, sometimes you might end up speaking to someone who simply doesnt want to engage with you - if this happens and you dont get anywhere, simply thank them for their time and hang up.

Good offer -what do you think?
  • Hi,
I've been with orange for about 3 years now and my phone contract is due to end in May, upgrades available from Feb.
I'm thinking about buying a blackberry curve, and switching to a sim only contract (with a blackberry add on). Just wondered if it is possible to switch to a sim only contract from normal contract and whether orange would make the switch in feb, got a feeling it will be May though!
    Thanks for any help.

Gosh, I think I am gonna try Retentions one more time and then I think I will call the PAC number tomorrow. All I want is a FREE HTC Desire HD and I am even willing to shell out £25 a month for unlimited texts, about 400 minutes, and some internet usage. Not much to ask for is it? They should be nice to me, I spend a lot of money with them. Wish me luck.

goodluck. If it doesnt go well, try going to carphone warehouse or phones4u, their upgrade deal includes line rental discount with free phone or try phoning orange as new customer to see if any offers are on.

But I wanna keep my number and that's the main sticking point for me.

So I called RETENTIONS and got offered the following 2 24 months contracts:

    a) HTC DESIRE HD FREE, and for £36 a month, 900 minutes, unlimited texts, 750 mg/gb internet and 50 photo messages

    b) HTC DESIRE HD £150, and for £23 a month, the same bundle as above.

Either of them any good? Otherwise I am gonna call PAC number tomorrow and if they wanna be awkward, looks like I will be going elsewhere.

I dont think their very good to be honest. You could probably get a better deal as new customer.

You can still keep your number if you upgrade with cpw or phones4u.

Dont take what i say as 100% but if i remember right, as an upgrade cpw and phones4u were offering me a free desire HD, 1200 mins, ulimited texts + internet for either £32 or £35 on orange (normally £42 or £45 but includes £10 line rental discount for duration of contract). I was mainly after BB but im sure they mentioned desire HD at one point.
