There's quite a lot of different things going on with these products, I think:

    - Some people will be attracted by a meat substitute that looks and tastes like a meat product.

Imagine all the additives that are needed to make vegetables to taste like meat.  Not very healthy.

They should start bringing out meat products that look like vegetables.  Burger that looks like a lettuce anyone!

    That's interesting, Cornucopia - thanks.
I have to admit that I like the taste and texture of meat.
I'm at the other end of the scale, won't touch meat with a bargepole and if I accidentally ate anything that tasted like meat I would be sick. So the "Vegetarian Butcher" may have shot itself in the foot with people like me. Although I appreciate there is a much bigger demographic of people to whom it might appeal. They are simply following the money.

Back to Lidl, there has been a distinct lack of orange stickers lately.

Still avoiding the Lidl/Aldi line of comments.....

....I'm with Pollycat in that I like meat and want to eat meat that's meat not pretend meat.  I also love vegetables and have really enjoyed getting to know more about vegetarian and vegan cooking.  But part of the that enjoyment is know that something that for most of my life has been a side attraction to a roast can also be the star feature of dinner as well.  Like having butternut squash on a pizza.  Completely different than having chorizo but that's what makes it so much fun.

OK - off shortly to Lidl to see what they can do for our dinner tonight!!!

My Lidl has had a distinct lack of stock recently and it's getting worse - today was so bad I walked out and went to tesco.  No potatoes or pasta, no carrots, massive gaps in the fruit and vegetable section, only apples available were Gala.  Lot's of gaps in the tinned goods. Very few biscuits and crisps.  The freezers and fridges virtually empty except for the fresh meat.

I'm guessing they simply aren't getting deliveries as It's not got noticeably busier and they usually fill the shelves first thing.  I'll probably plan my main shop elsewhere for a few weeks as I need to use up the freezer and store cupboard a bit and so have a little less flexibility in my meal plans than usual, not that there was anything in stock to flex with today.

Well, many of the Aldi products (and many such products) are made of Soya protein.   That's been a feature of veggie cooking for a long, long while.

    Oh dear.
A bit worried about the reports of empty shelves.
I've not been to Aldi for about 4 or 5 weeks and plan to go on Monday.
I just do a moochy little shop for things that take my fancy and OH does the main shop at Tesco.
    I'll report back.
  • The only displays empty in my local Lidl are those that contained ice cream, ice lollies, and the like.

Now I wonder why that would be? 🤔 😂

Felt sorry for someone who left their pack of water in the trolley.  Not sure how they managed to miss putting something so large in their boot.  As there was no one any where in the vicinity at that point I confess to having adopted the pack for my OH's use.  I will be paying compensation to the food bank - I've got this weird idea that items returned will either be put back on the shelf so the shop gets extra profit OR get chucked out as possibly contaminated.

Lidl fruit splits (ice lollies with the faintest slither of vanilla ice cream within) are not recommended. Kids might like them but I won't be rushing to eat them unless I have a sore throat
