Good and Bad Buys at Lidl and Aldi stores (***Please don't expire***)

The 200g packs of cherries on offer for 65p at Lidl are a good deal - king cherries (Regina variety) in my local store. 7/10 for taste. In contrast, the 99p strawberries in contrast looked dwarf, undernourished and anaemic.

The own brand chocolate mini-rolls are like tasteless foam, in case you were wondering - I suggest anyone who thinks they might be a good treat for little people to sample them before inflicting them on innocent children. 2/10.

That sounds familiar. I took some shortbread along to our bridge group one evening. At the break it disappeared very quickly. Lots of people asked where `I bought it.

The look on people’s faces when I told them I had made it were a picture. 😺😹😹Most home made cakes and biscuits are much nicer than shop bought especially when the latter have a lot of dubious sounding ingredients

To avoid ever expanding waistlines we gave up biscuits altogether a few years back (amazing how many calories there are in just one!) and ditched pretty much all shop cakes and puddings at the same time. The weight loss was the main reason, but home made cakes and puddings are so superior.

I really miss my mother’s Christmas pudding. She used a recipe from her mother who was a cook by trade. Sadly although I was “cooks helper” especially at Christmas, I never thought of writing the recipes down 😿

Well make sure you school the next generation in your own special recipes / record them, so that heritage is not lost!

I was having a similar conversation with my mum recently - her handwritten recipe book has gone AWOL. I told her I am bound to find it, its one thing I really want and then will pass it down to my nice when the time comes.

I have been waiting to try local blueberries and had been tracking when the PYO farm opened for the season. Now I've been buying BBs from Lidl for a very long time. Usually they are quite good, once or twice they have been a bit meh but they are a nice addition to my morning fruit bowl.

Anyhoo - went to the PYO farm, considered picking in our latest heatwave and opted to buy some ready picked. 500g for £8.75. Compared to £3.99 at Lidl. The flavour is incredible, they are perfect in every way, well worth the cost. I won't likely buy anymore until next year but I might consider going back to PMO.

Interesting. I used to enjoy blueberries until they went mainstream and volume took over from flavour. Never touch them now, but your solution might change that! Ever tried chuckleberries?

Lidl Deuxe blackberries come recommended by our tweenager. We did a blind taste test vs the produce of the bramble in my back garden and guess which won? 😄

what the heck is a chuckleberry!!!??? Never heard of them!! off to google…..

edited to add: not likely to look for them as I don't like currants. I do like gooseberries but won't be taking a chance unless they are offered free.
