It seems, from your experience, it's a case of what suits Aldi rather than the customer.
No that it's just Aldi as most, if not all, supermarkets are pushing people towards self service. Then they have to keep increasing steps to try to avoid 'help yourself' theft.🤔2 -

I went to a new(ish) branch of Lidl yesterday thinking that the bakery would be well stocked (correct) and that I would be able to sail through the self-service tills with a couple of items (very wrong). Self-service tills are not a function of modernity, it would seem: I was told that the reason they don't have them was because of the average spend per customer was too high. If it was low, they would consider it.
I'm sure they fear the reverse would happen - install a bank of self-service tills and people wouldn't fill their trolleys, they would grab a few bits and go. Whilst the tills are ringing there is no need to put contrary ideas into the customer's head!No man is worth crawling on this earth.

The lack of SS tills really GMG in Lidl. If I didn't have to queue for ages I'd go a lot more often.

All our local Lidl stored now have self service tills @gt568 but, in my experience, Lidl were always poor at opening up check outs compared with Aldi.
Possibly, they've stopped rolling out SS because of shoplifting? 🤔 I know they frequently shut down some of the SS tills (by putting an out of order sign up) as there seem to be a set number one person can oversee.0
