  • can anyone help, on the app for example sun gone elecky was 8.2p i think, anyway ive used 8.79kw @ £1.15 so
my working out £1.15 devided by 8.79kw = just over 13p kw i'm getting charged or is that with the SC inc
am i working it out wrong here or something
The cost on the app will only be accurate if you have the Octopus Home Mini.  That said, it does include the standing charge so 8.79x8.2=72.078 and leaves ~43p for standing charge, which is entirely plausible.

Start of year back to basics: When the price cap guarantee was introduced I seem to remember it was "defined" in terms of average spend per year per average family. How was that then and how is it now "translated" into p/kWh, incl. VAT, incl SC's (or not?), gas and leccy, for North East England?

They gave an average consumption of 3000 kwh for electricity and 12000 kwh gas per year and said that this would equate to £2500 per year. I don’t know how this works with regional price variations. Luckily for me, Yorkshire has always been a less expensive area.

  • Merry Christmas fellow trackers.

This year has been so cheap it's been unbelievable.

However I have started using octopus compare app and now it is clear once we are moved to December 2023 v1 or the new formula without any load shifting Agile will be cheaper as they have not changed the formula for Agile yet. It will undoutedly be much cheaper with some simple load shifting.

Probably worth trackers checking for free with the Octopus Compare app over the last 30 days (that's free) and then monitor until we are all moved to the new tracker formula next year.

To those that can't seem to find any other thread or create one to ask all their energy questions perhaps look at the whole forum ans search is great 😜😜🤣 many of my questions I would pose are easily found with search and not bunging up a thread with all sorts of different energy topics. But still Merry Christmas to you too 🎄🎄

    Merry Christmas :-)

I certainly agree with your underlying points that it's well worth everyone comparing Agile and Tracker given the likely imminent changes. Anyone on the margins may well find that Agile will be a better bet if/when prices for existing Tracker customers go up to the same as they are for new customers and Agile prices don't change.

At the same time, there are a couple of important factors to consider which may tip the balance in favour of Tracker.

Firstly, if you're on Tracker you can significantly reduce your bill by making use of the savings sessions. If you shift as much of your use to the peak period on non-savings day and then shift it away on savings days it's possible for some people to make significant savings. In my case, that's enough to tip the scales decisively in favour of Tracker while the savings scheme is running, even given my second point below....

Secondly, because of the way the formulae work, when Tracker prices are low, Agile prices are very low and when Tracker prices are high Agile prices are very high. This makes Agile relatively more attractive when prices are low. December prices have been very low overall, so any comparison based on December alone is likely to favour Agile. So I would be very cautious about putting too much store on the December pricing. That's not to say I think using the free Compare period is a bad idea at all, just that you need to be careful when interpreting the results.
  • I hope this topic will continue to be monitored as the new charges are fed in.My antiquated Android is not up to using Compare. I think that the conclusions reported to date have to come with a few caveats. My benefit from the Savings Sessions has amounted to pennies, a result most likely of limitations in my load shifting. Which makes me feel that switching to Agile may not be a bonanza (for me). Coupled with the high "gearing" of Agile which increases the risk / reward factor (which for some is catered for adequately by Tracker.). Which is why I'd lean towards basing a decision on averages going back over a number of months.

A few figures to underline my earlier point. These are for the last 3 weeks (i.e. since I moved to Tracker) and not for the whole of December.

Actual weighted average unit cost on Tracker without taking Savings Sessions into account: 15.53p/kWh
ditto but taking Savings Sessions into account:  7.66p/kWh
Estimate of what I would have paid on Agile: 10.42p/kWh

So would have been better for me on Agile without the Savings Sessions, but with the Savings Sessions Tracker is better than Agile.

Of course, this is going to vary according to how much you can shift your load. In my case, I can do this quite easily which allows me to make the best of either Agile or the Savings Sessions accordingly.

Well, most of the time. I have a friend with a teenage daughter who comes to stay from time to time, and all rules about energy use at peak time go out of the window. There's no way I'd risk arguing with said daughter - think "lamb" and "slaughter" with me playing the role of lamb. I had no idea of how high the running costs are for teenage daughters - definitely not a money saving option! (The more serious and relevant point being that it's much easier for some us to load shift than others and this is going to have a huge impact on your choice of tariff).

Assume the forecast was a bit wrong - its as windy here today as it has been the last few days.
  • Likewise here. But is it true that more wind = lower Tracker prices?? Other things being equal which they usually aren't.
