    Hi mmmmikey,

When you say "weighted average" I assume you mean taking account the usage (i.e. total cost divided by total KWh used) or have I misunderstood?

Hi - yes - total cost divided by total kWh used, as opposed the simple average of the daily rates. Hope this helps, Mike
  • I think it is Gas Tracker that does this calculation at one click. Except that this must be the simple unweighted average. This would be more appropriate for some not all comparisons?

Finally sorted.  Spoke to a lovely help customer services rep.  Very helpful was not sure why it was taking so long.  So they backed dated it 1st of december when I got my 1st email and I am pre 12th december formula.  So will wait for the updated bill.  And now to sort out working the best days to do loads of laundry!!

    Glad you got it sorted.

Weekends seem to be best at the moment for laundry. I must remember to put the stuff that needs ironing into the wash on Saturday so I can wield the iron across it on Sunday.

You and me both!!!  Where is the best place to get the prices for each day?
I am looking at https://mysmartenergy.uk for my area.  But is there anything better that I should use

There are a number of "Quick Links" listed at the bottom of this page some of which notably "Followed Content" don't seem to work. How do I get this forum listed or recognized for quick access?
    It works for me.

If you go to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories?followed=1&save=0 does anything show up?  If not, you need to 'follow' boards by clicking the little bell at the top.

Edit: and if that doesn't work, raise the issue on https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/site-feedback

For the daily prices I use gastracker.uk because it's simple, despite the name you can use it for the electricity prices, and you can use the graph to check historical prices back to summer 2022.  That's a bit fiddly to do but you can do it even on a mobile device whereas I can't get either of the other two sites to do both jobs for me, and this one I don't have to scroll to see the price either

Basically, try the different sites out, and see which you prefer for regular reference :)

To Spoonie Turtle, tks. I clicked on your link but the response was No Categories Found. I will go in search of your little bell instead
Edit: little sign of a little bell on my mobile screen :(

You can sign up for daily emails from gastracker. One for gas and one for electric.

  • To Spoonie Turtle. I have now found the little bell on my desktop screen. The bad news is that clicking on this leads only to "Notifications", but nothing that would make finding and accessing this particular forum any easier (if there isn't a relevant notification). There must be a way of "bookmarking" this Tracker forum but they don't make finding it any easier.
I think the advantage of using GasTracker is that you can get an (unweighted) average price at the click of a button. Which is to me more relevant for medium and longer term decisions.

Apologies if I'm being thick here - my only excuse is that I'm new to Tracker. But why do people use Gastracker etc? Do people not just check the daily electric price on Octopus's own app and decide from that whether it's a good day to do the laundry etc? And if prices are low, and if we're in Saver Session season, presumably do that laundry between 4:00 and 6:30pm to benefit from Octopus's previous ten day comparison?

I feel like I must be over-simplifying things but I can't work out why!
