"New wind power records are set regularly, and between 5:30pm and 6:00pm on 20th December 2023 British wind farms averaged a record 21.71GW of generation."
    21.89GW as of now.
Lots of wind here and more to come apparently.

    Great for Tracker 👍

Yes indeed a welcome Christmas bonus - 12.11p/kWh electricity for me tomorrow and potential for it to keep falling.

On the downside, I'm starting to wonder if Santa's going to be able to deliver all his presents in this wind and next doors wheelie bin just went scooting down the road....
  • Hi, currently on Octopus Flexible, was considering switching to E.On Next pledge, but then began reading up on Octopus tracker.  Been doing a LOT of reading, and am still at a crossroads.   I'd be on the new Dec 23 formula, coming into, what should be, theoretically,  most expensive months on the tracker, but looking at the historical daily price data for Eastern on Tracker, it still looks like I'd have to have an extended period of catastrophic days/weeks to not benefit from being on Tracker.

Even so, my instincts are telling me to wait it out until say March when demand typically dips, and the risk of spikes should  theoretically be lower? (I have the means to be able to ride out a few spikes).   Any advice on timings?  It just feels a bit counter-intuitive to sign up coming into the winter months when even Octopus say prices will "likely double" on the tracker.   Any advice appreciated, thanks.

It's very quick and easy to switch between Octopus tariffs, or to swap out to another supplier. Given that Tracker prices are so low at the moment, there is a school of thought that says you might as well just get on the 'phone and switch while you weigh up longer term options. As long as you keep an eye on the prices you're very unlikely to get caught out by this approach as you can just switch back at any time or on to another tariff if that's what you would prefer. There are a few restrictions, such as if you switch on to Tracker and then off, you can't switch back to Tracker for 9 months.

If you want to do this I suggest calling them to effect the switch to Tracker as with a bit of luck they'll do it while you're on the 'phone and then you can take advantage of the current bargain pricing bonanza.

edit: a quick afterthought - the switch to Tracker is only this quick if you already have a suitable smart meter
  • @saoliver You seem well informed and aware of what’s happening so Tracker may well suit you. Providing you continue to monitor it for price spikes, TODAY could be a good time to switch to benefit from low prices today and likely to fall further over the holiday.

tlcgrantham & @mmmmikey, nothing ventured nothing gained, thanks, so I've just called them & they are getting their switch team to put me onto the Tracker today.  Cheers!

Don't forget this bit as well...

We may not have seen examples of this sort of delay yet, but they certainly reserve the right for it not to be 'quick' ....
