OE would make more sense, Octopus Energy.
(Though my brain will likely forever read it as Old English.)
and OP is Old Peculier ...

    N. Hampshire, he/him. Octopus Intelligent Go elec & Tracker gas / Vodafone BB / iD mobile. Ripple Kirk Hill member.
    2.72kWp PV facing SSW installed Jan 2012. 11 x 247w panels, 3.6kw inverter. 34 MWh generated, long-term average 2.6 Os.
Not exactly back from my break, but dipping in and out of the forum.
Ofgem cap table, Ofgem cap explainer. Economy 7 cap explainer. Gas vs E7 vs peak elec heating costs, Best kettle!
  • So the interesting thing I picked up on Social Media.

What happens when Octopus hit the change everyone to the new fixed tracker tariff in the new year and they are still on dumb meters. The December 2023 v1 clearly states smart meters are a requirement.

Either the dumb meter customers get swtched over, or they get kicked off the tariff.
What do people on Social Media think is going to happen? Black helicopters making dead-of-night visits to fit smart meters?

The concensus is most normal people are saying get your smart meter fitting booked in now.

    No Special Ops required 🤣🤣🤣

I m still on dumb meters, I ll let you know if that happens  .If I get booted its bye bye Octopus . The new rates are a little closer to EPG being electric  17.6 p kwh on Nov 22 and  up to 19.77 p on Dec 23 rates .Gas is a smaller rise being 4.37 p kwh up to 4.77 p kwh on Dec 23 ..Shown on the Octopus Energy latest  Tracker  website

    From Tracker FAQ:

If they aren't going to move people off Tracker should their smart meters stop sending readings, how could they justify kicking existing Tracker customers, who don't have smart meters, off the tariff just because Octopus have chosen to force them onto a new version? It also says that the smart meter requirement is for those switching to Tracker...

They are nowhere near EPGneven at December 2023 v1 rates and looking at the price comparison sites for tracker version still showing the potential to be 20% cheaper year round.

I do find these no smart people interesting.

I do hope Octopus enforce this as it doesn't appear to be their ethos in the future if energy provision to have dumb customers not uploading their data every 30 mins.
  • Into the 16p's for Yorkshire today and cheaper days to come

It will be interesting how they go.

I can understand people with smart meters fitted with issues will be allowed whatever they decide.

Those.with Dumb meters perhaps they give them.one year to sort it and have smart meters fitted. Perhaps that would be an Octopus thing to do

Taking your question at face value, it seems to me perfectly reasonable for customers to expect Octopus to take the hit and absorb any costs associated with putting things right if something goes wrong with a customer's smart meter and it stops sending readings, or if there are technical issues that stop the meter working in the first place.

On the flip side, if a customer chooses not to have a smart meter it seems perfectly reasonable to me for Octopus to take the view that they've set the Tracker rates based on a fully automated smart-meter system and decline to take on customers who won't have a smart meter.

Similarly, the market for smart energy tariffs is still in development with customers being told that some of the Octopus tariffs are beta tariffs - i.e. still being tested. So perfectly reasonable, in my view, for Octopus to change the terms and conditions of their smart tariffs as they gain experience from testing. Again, IMHO, this would reaasonably include stipulating a requirement for existing customers to have a smart meter, and given reasonable notice declining to offer Tracker to those customers who choose not to.
