What they appear to mean is that the pricing of the existing tariffs will be updated in January. Notice will therefore have to be served on those customers in accordance with the terms. They will have to get a move on if 11th Jan is the intended date of the change.Pat38493 said:
Yes, but the FAQ that came out yesterday seemed to make it pretty clear that if your tariff has an end date, the old tariff would at least last until the end date? I will be pretty miffed if they say that I have to move onto the higher price in January when my account says that the tariff is until November 2024.SpanishBlue said:LtMike77 said:"Supposedly" someone is claiming they have seen an email from Octopus CS saying everyone is going on the new tariff in January.
They quoted the text but not a screenshot. Going to take that with a good pinch of salt until we see some proper proof.I saw this on the FB group, quoting the email. Thanks for getting in touch. This will be effective from January for all existing Tracker accounts, those applying after the 11th will be placed on the new tariff, with all other customers prior to 11th December being changed in January.Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. All the best,DanOctopus Energy

Maybe what they mean is that from January everyone will have an expiry date on their tariff.

That is superb 👍👍Slinky said:I applied just before 4pm yesterday, then somebody on here posted the link with the new rates, which I wasn't aware of when I applied. I sent a very polite email asking if they could possibly put me on the old rate, and they did. Got to love Octopus.0 -
OK - but if they can just change the prices whenever they like, does that mean the "end date" and the "fixed 12 month period" that they discuss in the FAQ is completely meaningless?masonic said:

I don't think less than a month is 'reasonable notice' for an entire formula change. I won't believe it unless Octopus actually sends out a mass e-mailing telling us it's happening.masonic said:

Maybe what they mean is that from January everyone will have an expiry date on their tariff. The end date defines a fixed term, after which the tariff must be renewed or changed. The lack of exit fees make the fixed term fairly irrelevant.Spoonie_Turtle said:

28 days has been considered reasonable in the past. I won't believe any speculation either, even messages from members of staff have been proven wrong. I will await an official communication.1 -
The next question then I guess would be - if their intention is to increase the pricing for everybody to the new formula, why didn't they just do that? Why introduce a new tariff just for new customers, and then less than a month later, force everyone on all prior tariffs to the same pricing - surely it would've been easier just to increase the price on all the existing tariffs?masonic said:The end date defines a fixed term, after which the tariff must be renewed or changed. Sounds to me like Octopus have got too many different versions of Tracker and rules around them which is starting to cause all kinds of confusion. Progressively moving people on to a fixed set of 12 month contracts sounds like a reasonable idea in principle but unfortunately I expect it will cause even more confusion in the short term. To be fair, Octopus do have a good track record of "doing the right thing" so personally I'm happy just to go with the flow and see what happens.

They are not permitted to do that under the T&C. They must give reasonable notice to existing customers. That means personally notifying each customer. Without a new tariff for new customers in the interim, they would have to delay charging new customers on the new basis for at least a month.

Which then implies that they are desperate to implement this change immediately for new customers and it can't wait until all existing customers had their "reasonable notice".masonic said:Pat38493 said:

Are they expecting a huge influx of new Tracker customers between now and January then?0 -

Are they expecting a huge influx of new Tracker customers between now and January then?It has normally been the case that when they decide to change a tariff, they make it effective immediately upon new customers and deal with existing customers later (if at all). Usually the first we know about it is when the existing tariff is removed from the 'Current Tariffs' list into 'Historic Tariffs' and is replaced. None of that is out of the ordinary. It has already mentioned that there is an influx of customers being migrated onto the platform, and a fair number of these might opt for the Tracker tariff when they are able to do so. It is possible this has influenced the timing of the decision to review pricing, but the implementation has so far been entirely consistent with their standard operating procedure.2
