I also got the invite email despite not receiving any confirmation emails when I joined the waitlist.  But, as I'm on Agile I was not too bothered.  The wording on the email suggests that later this month there will be no waitlist and people can have the tracker tariff whenever they like:

If you don't accept the terms by 6th July 23:59, we'll assume you don't want to switch to Tracker. We’ll be removing the waitlist after 1 July, and website sign ups will reopen in early July, so you can always reapply via our website at any time.

I'm not 100% sure that means there won't be another waitlist.

Is everyone on a smart tariff being told that they need to be on Flexible for a few days before switching to Tracker?

    No.

I had my invite 10 minutes ago to switch from Agile straight to electric Tracker (I'm keeping gas on flexible) and it states the same as above, backdated to the 1st. No electric flexible switching requirement mentioned.

Out of curiosity, why gas on Flexible rather than Tracker?

Then it's possible that the email I received was written under the assumption that its recipients are already on Flexible. Or a change to meter profile kicks you off your current tariff, which would be a pain.

Surely that's because you are, or have been on E7 at some point. That's what I call a 2 rate meter.

Just had by renewal email re v3 tracker (gas only - no smart meter) - same email as one posted earlier in this thread.

Replied back asking to stay on tracker and had an email back saying

'Thanks for getting in touch with us at Octopus Energy. I'm glad to hear that you've decided to stay on the Octopus Tracker tariff for your gas.'

I have not applied to have a smart gas meter so will see what actually happens in 6 weeks time.

I hope they stick to their word and kick you off tracker otherwise it's an empty threat like checking if you have an EV on their previous EV tariffs🤔🤣

Be interesting as to what they do I think they will just leave it all as is without the need for a smart meter.

Update for you, my tracker V3 expired on the 25/06/23, I was rolled onto 'Flexible Octopus tariff'.  Emailed customer services pointing email from them in May and yesterday they wrote back very apologetic and confirmed I am on tracker for Gas backdated to original expiry expiry on 25th June.

On checking the online account I am now apparently on Tracker v3 -  fixed term until 25/06/2024 - makes no sense!

A great result for you, they appear to have renewed your v3 rather than put you on the latest version. This was either a mistake on their behalf or a gesture of goodwill for messing things up.
Double mistake - No gas smart meter.

Elsewhere someone with a smart meter August renewal contacted them to say wanted to stay on tracker tariff answer was had to go on waiting list.

Octopus really do seem all over the shop in what they do, when I queried them about confirmation if I am on the electric tracker waiting list, they responded by moving me, completely unexpected with what has been stated publically.

You were already on gas tracker should have had electricity moved to tracker following request, some got told had to go on waiting list.

I did get told that as well and actually signed up to the waiting list, its only the second query they seemed to change their mind, I only made the second query because there was no confirmation at all for the waiting list so wanted to be sure I was on it.

So yeah there seems to be no consistency, I guess a training issue.

I have a smart meter, but the previous meter was E7. I've been on smart tariffs ever since my current meter was installed. That doesn't really explain why it would be necessary to switch from Agile to Flexible before switching to Tracker.

Who told you, that you had to go on flexible first? I was moved straight from agile to tracker.
