Money Moral Dilemma: Was I wrong to pay my mate back in fish and chips?

  • Totally out of order to do that.  That was his money.  Plus you don't normally charge each other for food but take turns.  I'd get that money back to him with a bottle of his favourite tipple and an apology.  Your friendship is more important than that £5 (or hopefully it is)
  • Not surprised he got annoyed with you.  You should have returned the money and given him a sandwich!
  • Er, yeah. If you hadn't prearranged that was how you'd pay it back, it was totally shady of you.

Just dont accuse him of having a chip on his shoulder

p.s -- don't forget to charge him to use your facilities as well
  • Wrong, wrong, wrong, and you know you were. You had no right to decide what to spend his money on, he may not have wanted fish and chips and wanted the £5 instead

After giving him the £5 back, think about the cost and effort involved in getting tens of people to provide their own takes on what you should or shouldn't have done.  This could probably be costed at £hundreds.
PS  Please send me my charge of £2 ASAP...!

Yes you were wrong 😑 give him the £5 and be done with it. Apologise for your actions  if you want to remain friends
  • If you were both at the chippy and about to pay, you could offer to pay for them with the £5 owed. Personally I would even pay up to £10 to show you do care for them as a mate; plus showing you were grateful for lending you the money when you needed it, and if you really want to get pedantic it could be seen as interest gained on the money borrowed.

Without making it clear before purchasing the chips that the intention was to clear your debt with this offering I can see your mates frustration.
  • Sorry MSE but this is the funniest thread title I've every read. Read last night and lol and told Mr J this morning and he lol.

Next time ww will top up our car with fuel and give them  a big Mac. :)

On a more serious note. the chap was wrong on every level to repay in fish n chips, :)
