Money Moral Dilemma: Was I wrong to pay my mate back in fish and chips?

I would be upset too, you asked him to lend you £5 - he did you a favour, I doubt he will again. Pay him back what you borrowed. You said you usually cook for each other so it was your choice to buy fish and chips not his. Is it really worth spoiling your friendship over £5, you know what you should do, you shouldn't have to ask!!2

Yes I think you were wrong, you asked him for tea so you provide the food, especially if you usually cook for each other. Also you have no right to chose how he spends his money, he may have been counting on that £5 for something.0

Not necessarily, but you have to know your mate. If you'd said to them hey bud, you know that fiver I owe you shall I just get the chippy, then maybe. It seems like a communication issue. Your mate seems like not a particularly close one or just needs the cash. I'm a little astonished by the amount of people who have responded that you are wrong. It's a fiver and a mate!!0

REJP said:Of course you have to give him his £5. Sounds like a regular thing between you that you have meals together.
I suggest you look up “Neither a borrower nor a lender be......”. on whatever search engine you use.
Sums it up for you.
Those words are spoken by Polonius, a pompous old fool who comes to a bad end. Not someone from whom I would take advice, even though he was created by a genius.

Yes. If you'd arranged to go out for a meal and you paid £5 of his bill that should have been acceptable. But if you regularly eat at each other's houses and don't pay each other, you choosing not to actually cook does not clear the debt.1

Yes you are wrong. Apologise quick and pay back the money. Save you friendship.1

It wasn't your decision to make 😣1

If you owe the money, you should pay the money back.
If you are owed the money, accept it in kind.
That is friendship.0 -
What a cheapskate you are !!
Dip your hand into your pocket and pay him what you borrowed plus a little more for your bare-faced cheek !!
He obviously helped you out when you needed it, so just pay your mate what you owe, always assumung that he is still your mate !!
True mates and friends, NEVER treat each other as you have chosen to do.
As you have failed miserably to repay the loan without prompting, I am sure that he will never repeat the kind gesture.
You sound like the guy who when out for an evening with mates, suddenly has to go home......... just when it is his round !!!
I'll finish this exactly as I started.......................WHAT A CHEAPSKATE YOU ARE !!!0
