My mate recently lent me £5. Last week he came over for dinner in the garden, and I'd bought us both fish and chips. He asked if I had the £5 I owed him, and I said that was what I'd spent on his meal. He got upset about me "charging him for food", and said he'd do the same when I next visit him. But we usually cook for each other and don't make each other pay. Was it wrong to pay him back in fish and chips?

A case for pouring oil on troubled waters?0

You are out of order - give him his £5.00 back. Don’t think he will lend you money again, I certainly wouldn’t.6

Anyone else (once they’ve fallen about laughing) just decided that life is far too short? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.10 -
Completely wrong to do .I’d be very annoyed. But I wouldn’t charge them for food at mine as I’d never speak to them again1

Yes, yes, and thrice yes, you were wrong, you plant pot!
Either the question is a joke or you are the most unaware person in the country. Even if you stay friends, you need to know the recipient of your largesse will never really be your true mate again, and will harbour a lifelong dislike and contempt for you. He'll never say it to you, but that is how he'll feel. Still, you saved a fiver.6 -
The fact that you have asked this question is shocking enough and to put a top hat on it you have charged your 'friend' to eat at your home. Pay him the measly £5.00 and shame on you.5

Not sure this is reel, but just for the halibut I'll take the bait.
It may not be my plaice to say, but the take away here is you've caught a chip on your shoulder.
Don't get me wrong, cod loves a fryer but having landed a five pounder you try to palm a tiddler off on salmon else.
Not sure what kind of ship you sail, but it doesn't seem much of a friend-ship to be honest12 -
Think was very tight. Give your mate his fiver back - he lent you actual money - pay him back in money.3

Some people might argue that it’s just £5 but to be bloody stingy that instead of paying back £5 that you decide to pay back with food is just I don’t have the words to describe lol.
Just give back the £5 and apologise for being a !!!!!!.
Next time if you want to pay back in food or whatever else, ask the person if you can pay them back in this way, but get their permission first before doing so!3
