A case for pouring oil on troubled waters?
  • Completely wrong to do .
I’d be very annoyed. But I wouldn’t charge them for food at mine as I’d never speak to them again
  • Think was very tight. Give your mate his fiver back - he lent you actual money - pay him back in money.

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

My mate recently lent me £5. Last week he came over for dinner in the garden, and I'd bought us both fish and chips. He asked if I had the £5 I owed him, and I said that was what I'd spent on his meal. He got upset about me "charging him for food", and said he'd do the same when I next visit him. But we usually cook for each other and don't make each other pay. Was it wrong to pay him back in fish and chips?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be a point of debate and discussed at face value.

    You were wrong man.

Some people might argue that it’s just £5 but to be bloody stingy that instead of paying back £5 that you decide to pay back with food is just I don’t have the words to describe lol.

Just give back the £5 and apologise for being a !!!!!!.

Next time if you want to pay back in food or whatever else, ask the person if you can pay them back in this way, but get their permission first before doing so!
