    What a stupid question to ask!

    There is no way that your mate can turn the fish and chips that you bought into cash.
  • I agree with most people here, you borrowed a fiver, you didn't borrow fish and chips from him.

    could he have taken the fish and chips and used it as payment for something he wanted for a fiver?

    Insensitive and wrong. You chose to buy the fish and chips instead of cooking. If you had cooked the meal you would not have charged him. It has to be your mates choice to forgive you a debt. If you cannot afford to pay him back be up front, he may then forgive you the debt. If that isn't the problem the there are no excuses. You still owe him £5.

    You buy someone dinner as a treat or to say thanks, not as a way of paying them back what you owe and forcing it upon them. You don't know if they were struggling for money and needed it.
