    I live in the south - fish and chips costs the best part of a tenner - not including peas, gravy etc.  You should have given him his £5 back - he did not ask you to buy food for him!

    I would have just given him the £5 back and not used it to buy fish and chips.  **Fish and chips costs way more than £5 where live**.

    I agree, you shoiuld have given him the option of money or dinner, not to just assume it was ok to spend HIS £5 on what you  decide. Give him his £5, small amount to lose a friend over. He was good enough to lend it, you should be good enough to pay it back.
