Afternoon
WinterWarrior - that was very kind and i'm sure will be appreciated by both your friends.
I can finally see blue sky so i'm going to nip out for fresh air, first time I've been out for a proper walk since Weds! Won't go far as i'm WfH but i want some fresh air while i have the opportunity.
I'm spendy this month as i have a few birthdays including one for a friend that ended in an 0! I also had to pay for my garden waste subs for the first time. Was going to share with my neighbour but he's decided he needs his own sub for his greenhouse, oh well.

@Scottiedog_3 I thought most councils charge for garden waste to be collected. We pay £37 a year on top of council tax for our to be collected fortnightly. It is the first thing to be cancelled, without refund, if there is bad weather.
My friend in another area pays £42 a year and only gets fortnightly collections from March to October, which I think is extortionate!

We don't pay any extra - at the moment. I have a Dalek-type compost bin and a brown council garden waste which they used to play sillybeggars with and refuse to empty. I started to treat it like an extra compost bin - then suddenly it was emptied again on a three-weekly basis, as are all the bins. Worryingly, the council have slapped weighing devices on bins in a neighbouring New Town, so we can shortly expect our rubbish to be removed and charged by the kilo. We have a wild garden, with a small wood down a banking (where the rabbits live), so garden waste is actually branded wild things habitat and left in a pile out of the way 😁 it’s one of the good things about a country garden. Next doors, however, is pristine….I bet they shake their heads at ours 😁 but I want bugs, insects, hedgehogs and rabbits, etc. to thrive here.Deni…bounty are the best! Not all who wander are lost - J.R.R.Tolkien

Ours are still free fortnightly & include food waste. I think it is cheaper for them to do that than to pay for it all to land up in landfill. A couple of years ago they sent out a leaflet explaining how much each type of disposal cost. The idea is that the more you get in the cheaper versions the less the council tax is likely to go up. A few years ago I was at someones house & someone was ranting about how SHE wasn't going to do the councils job for them by putting her waste in the right bins & a couple of people agreed with her. I'm even more outspoken IRL than I am on here, so I just told her that I was glad we were in a different council area as her council tax was going to go up more than mine. I then had to explain. I'm prepared to bet that they had a very similar leaflet to mine but it will have gone straight in the bin. It is the thing I miss about being retired, talking to someone with more than 2 brain cells. Which is probably why I spend so much time on here.

We get a weekly food waste collection. We do have a small compost bin but there is still stuff that needs to go in the food waste collection bin such as cooked food, bones etc.
I think recycling is really important for those that are able to do it. For example my DH's mum was well into her 80s with the start of dementia when the council introduced all the various bins for different things so we contacted them and got her a black bin which meant everything could go in it rather than getting fined for putting things in the wrong bin! I don't the fining people ever actually happened but as she has since died and we don't know anyone in that council area any more we don't really know!

hi all
I'm ok with paying for my garden waste; i work in the public sector so i understand the issues/challenges facing local gov. It's the first time my council has charged for garden waste as a separate service. My parents live in a different part of the country and have been paying for a few years and the area i work also charges. Where i live has a good doorstep recycling service & has collected food waste for a few years too.
badmemory - glad to hear you put that person straight - i hate that sort of attitude of 'why should i ....'LBM - October 2018; finally debt free on 16 March 2021

Our recycling is very limited here. Just an normal bin and a cardboard/plastic/paper/cans bin. No food waste or even glass. Where I used to live there was just a small crate for glass, plastic and tins. It’s odd how they all deal with it differently. Not all who wander are lost - J.R.R.Tolkien
