My partner switched his old Nationwide account to this Halifax one, switch should be complete soon and we've already received the £100.

However we've not yet selected a reward as we don't have £5000 to put in there and can't spend £500 per month on the debit card. What happens if we don't select a reward? Can they take away the £100 somehow?

no they cant/wont take away £100. It's a reward account where you get rewards but I dont think there will be an issue if you dont want any rewards.  You can be eligible for your chosen reward without actually spending £500. Top up to Revolut, Pay to your spouse via PayPal (Halifax Debit card linked), Deposits to Savings account who accepts Debit card payments (for e.g. NS&I, Skiption).  Lot of info are available in previous pages...

But be aware that there is £3 monthly fee to maintain the account and if you pay in £1,500 or more each month you won’t pay the fee.

Thank you. I'm aware of the £1500 pay in, I already did that with the Nationwide account so will just swap that to the Halifax account now.  :)

As for the £500, we don't have any of those saving accounts. I do have a PayPal account but my partner doesn't (the Halifax account is in his name) so I'm not sure how that would work exactly?

I also have a Chip+ account which lets you add funds from a debit card, but again it's in my name so I can't link his card to it. I've done this all wrong haha.  :D

PayPal is free so just ask your oartner to sign up and if you refer him, you both will get £10, check out your account and should see this offer.  So another £20 in total between two of you.  It's really easy, when your partner PayPal account is up and ready, add Halifax debit card, pay to your PayPal through this debit card, easy!!!!  You can also top up to Revolut (my prefered way and works perfectly well for me)

I wouldnt recommend Chip as they will charge you if you are keeping more than £100 in your balance.

Applied, accepted, reward options selected, and switch from M&S initiated. Took all of five minutes.
I've also put a fiver into my M&S account, just so it's got something to actually switch!

My switch has been rejected - Neither party can tell me why, but I assume because the name on my M&S account is not in the same format as on my Halifax account.
Halifax has my full first name and middle name, whereas M&S has my abbreviated first name and no middle name.
Is there any way around this, or am I stuffed?

My partner also had the same issue with her Lloyds Bank but I picked it up before switching and requested Lloyds to update it. Had to wait for few days before it gets updated in their systems. Once it was updated then only she proceeded with the switch. I always check these things before processing the switch.

So you may request M&S bank to update your details as you have on Halifax and perhaps do the switch again?

I'll give it a try but I don't have high hopes of getting it all to happen in time to claim the bonus.
I didn't realise the name matching would be so strict, otherwise I would have sorted it well in advance. All I can hope is that if I explain the situation to both parties some human discretion can be applied and it's not just a "computer says no" situation.

If name is the issue then as per me I think you should still be eligible.

And if having got the switch bonus you don't want the rewards, presumably you can just downgrade to the normal current account (via the upgrade button) to avoid the £3 monthly fee instead of making extra payments or bouncing money in/out every month?

If name is the issue then as per me I think you should still be eligible.
I got M&S to update my name. They suggested I wait 24 hours before initiating the switch again, but I logged into online banking and it's been updated already and now exactly matches the name that Halifax has for me, so I kicked it off again.

Great, good to know that you have sorted this out..hopefully all works out this time. If still doesn't then last resort can be using another bank instead of M&S.

Sorry if I am being a bit thick here (it's getting late and have got fed up trying to downgrade my Santander 123 account without success)...  I have a Halifax current account which I use for bills on one house.  I have a Santander 123 account which I use for bills at another house.  Both are registered to one address though.  I was planning to switch the Santander 123 account to Halifax Reward current account but when I try to do a switch it is forcing me to switch to the existing basic Halifax current account.  Do I need to open the Reward Account first as a new account and then switch my Santander 123 account into it?
Terms: "Open a new Halifax Reward Current Account and switch and close your old account held elsewhere using the Current Account Switch Service. You’ll get £100 paid..."
