  • I don't know anything about social services but I had always assumed they should be able to assess you in your home (or over the telephone, currently).

VAT exemption applies to eligible items if you have a disability, which according to the law: "You’re disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities."  From what you've written it sounds like you qualify :)

Google Assistant works for me on my phone and tablet without having to unlock my screen - although both of mine are just swipe to unlock, I don't know if having it security protected would mean it stopped working like that.  Maybe have a look at your Assistant settings to check if there's anything you can tweak in there.  It doesn't seem logical to me to have a hands-free voice-activated assistant that will only work if you physically unlock your phone first.

Its great that VAT exemption applies to me but what do i need to do ?...what form do i need to fill in ?...Sorry, i have been in UK since 15 years and never ever claimed Universal Crdit or PIP. this is my 1st time, thats why i dont know nothing. I was working for NHS forensic mental health care assistant and my take home wages were approx £2200 to £2400 and today i get paid only £830 per months. Tough to live on that with bills etc. Many thanks again. i will have to find out how to work google assistant on a lock screen as it has a pin to type to unlock the screen.

VAT exemption applies to eligible products (designed specifically to help with the effects of disability - this is determined by the maker and HMRC, not the supplier) when you buy them.  The supplier should have a form for you to fill out, literally just a declaration with your name, usually your address, and the name of whatever disability you're buying the item to help with.

Not all products used by disabled people are exempt, and non-disabled people are allowed to buy the products too but if it's not to help with a disability then they have to pay the VAT.  E.g. someone buying a wheelchair because of arthritis versus someone buying a wheelchair because of a broken leg.  I think cymruchris probably suggested it thinking that some of these alert systems might be eligible for VAT relief.

The cheap and cheerful option I know of is a Doro mobile phone. There's one model which has an SOS button on the back.

But it's a horrible phone in all other respects, so you might want to keep it just for this purpose. And it won't work if you're not conscious.

    Hi All,
Hope all of you are doing well ?
I have many illnesses and i fall over in the bedroom or toilet etc. I was hoping if anyone can advise me on a budget/cheap gadget which i am sending the link of below. What i need is 1 or 2 Fobs and a similar gadget in the link. The problem with the gadget below is no matter what, you have to reach the gadget coz the fobs ONLY arms or disarms the main auto dialer unit. i need something that the fob button will dial the programmed number/s when button pressed on the fob. I mean if i fell over in the washroom and i would have to crawl to the main auto dial unit to press which ever button. you see. the key fobs only ARMS or DISARMS the main unit. I hope i am clear.
Many thanks to all and await to hear from someone.
    Thank you and be safe
    Kind regards

I don't know where you live, but in our area Council Adult Services offer "Telecare"

    >>A pendant alarm can be kept with you at all times so you can press the button on it when you need help. This will alert a response centre who monitor the alarm day and night. They can call to check you’re okay, tell a family member or friend or let the emergency services know.<<

I know from experience with my mother falling a couple of times how well this works. They contact someone for you and will also call emergency services.
We had to pay £3.10 a week for this. But is worth it's weight in gold when accidents happen.

Yes that's exactly what I was thinking - that if you had to pay for something in this situation to at least see if you could save the VAT on any payments you had to make. I would certainly get back on to your local council/social services - as they are doing telephone consultations now - and see whether you qualify for some kind of panic alarm. They are usually heavily subsidised and as above can be about £3 a week - which on one hand isn't a lot of money - but do appreciate you're on a very tight budget. Do you see your condition improving with a  view to going back to work at some point?
  • trust me  all the good people here...I COULD GO BACK TO WORK TOMORROW..AS WHAT I AM SPECIALISED AT HEALTH CARE ASSSISTANE FOR FORENSIC MENTAL HEALTH....BUT I AM JUST NOT BEING ABLE TO WORK ACCORKING TO MY SURGOEN AND MY GP.

So get back onto Social Services for your local area and tell them because of your condition you need a fall panic alarm and see what options they can offer. If you're living alone - why do you need to have the screen lock activated? From what you've said it's unlocked at home you'll be able to use your google assistant. The Amazon echo range of devices are available from about £40 a piece - but are sometimes on promotion. Usually the cheapest model that would be useful at home would be the 'Echo dot' - and they often offer these refurbished for a lower price. They have promotions on Echo products every few weeks - so if money is tight - you might want to keep an eye on the prices day by day until a promotion starts. Today for example - the Echo show 5 which is a great little machine is half price down to £39.99 - but it's usually £79.99.

Confused as to why you have started a 2nd thread on the same subject, which has the same answers.

So have you been off sick since you were dismissed from you role in January 2020?
