Amex accepted sensible limit

Nice to be accepted by Amex tonight, sensible 1700 limit.
Though their Nectar card was tempting, opted for lower 22.2`%  Platinum cash back card.
Those spend thousands per... intro offers are way above my spending.
What is the often posted concern about using Amex in retailers.
thanks

I've yet to have an issue in a physical store not accepting Amex in my own experience bar our local Costa. From memory of similar threads B&Q sticks out as someone whom I think won't take it.

That said I've had much more issues online with retailers not taking Amex. Which is a shame

1 in 4 payments I would say do not accept Amex physical store wise. Mainly small independents don't accept it. As such Amex still has the reputation of not being accepted, something they really should have sorted by now. Perhaps they should not charge so much.

IME, that's an exaggeration. I've had an AmEx Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card since October 2017, and use it as my default credit card (except, now, at Amazon). I reckon that I can get about 95%+ of my spending on it. Yes, there are businesses that don't accept it, but they are becoming fewer.

As mentioned above, B&Q doesn't accept it, but I think there's a way round that. Order online for click & collect, pay by PayPal and link your AmEx card to PayPal. At least, I think that'd work for Click & Collect - I've only done it that way for some stuiff that I had delivered here, and that certainly worked. The only other large business that I use but which doesn't accept it is my local VW/Audi dealer (part of a regional chain). I can even use the PayPal/AmEx method for a curry from my local takeaway. (Ordering online gets me a 10% discount, with free delivery, and allows me to pay by PayPal, even though they don't accept AmEx over the counter.)

As far as I know, all of the major supermarkets accept it. I use it at Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Tesco myself. If memory serves, Aldi has accepted it for about a year now. I've never had difficulty using it for petrol, though I guess that there might be the odd pettrol station that doesn't accept it.

As for credit limits, mine started at £4,000. AmEx then offered me an increase to £6,000 after three months and another, to £14,000, after another year (i.e., 15 months from account opening). I've not been offered another since then, but really don't need it - the initial £4,000 would still be enough for my needs!

    This is a weekly discussion...

The answer is it depends where you are to some degree... seems some members live in places where almost no where takes it where as in London/South East the vast majority of places do. Many small businesses, popups, markets etc use the likes of iZettle, Square and PayPal all of which accept AmEx as standard. The notable standout is B&Q which can be circumvented if required by either ordering online and paying with PayPal or buying a gift card online and then using that in store.

Even before Covid I could name many more places here that won't accept cash than dont accept AmEx

Hard to believe someone who isn't even out of a DMP yet applying for cards like there's no tomorrow the moment the brakes are let off.

I see another DMP in the not so distant future.
