..we could buy a LOT of jigsaws with the money we planned to spend and haven't!!I was also going to change the car last year, but since we have done less than 2k miles it hardly seems worth it, and now I am losing interest in changing it anyway...hope it's not a sign of things to come post covid, (assuming there is a post covid?).."It's everybody's fault but mine...."2

Whilst the home improvements market is booming , the automotive industry is the opposite, due to what you say above .Stubod said:..we could buy a LOT of jigsaws with the money we planned to spend and haven't!!I was also going to change the car last year, but since we have done less than 2k miles it hardly seems worth it, and now I am losing interest in changing it anyway...hope it's not a sign of things to come post covid, (assuming there is a post covid?)
Normally my car does around 18, 000 miles pa . Probably has done less than 2,000 in the last 11 months .5 -
And TV. Never watched so many miniseries or movies. Some good and some not so good.Sea_Shell said:We've not done any home improvements or DIY at all.
Just couldn't muster the enthusiasm....plus nothing really needs doing.
Jigsaws....I've done Jigsaws!!2 -
And as a two car household, it's been very rare for both of ours to be in use at the same time over the last year. Makes us wonder...Albermarle said:

What we are doing is keeping the money in our investments and have rebooked the holidays planned for last year to later this year.
But generally our planned expenditure covers little more than day to day basics which hasnt dropped much. Anything beyond that comes from capital.2 -
We ended up spending last year's big holiday refund on complete redecoration of the top floor of the house into husband's home office and also replacing the boiler which was very poorly despite being only 7 years old. New boiler is bigger and I have been very grateful for it recently. This year we are going to replace the greenhouse - we got a picket fence installed round the whole veggie area so there is some chance of growing things without dog destruction. We did try to get it done this month but couldn't get an installer in the right timeframe- it will have to last one more growing season. I foresee some significant time in the garden as foreign travel is not going to be happening any time soon. We were going to Tanzania last summer - their approach to Covid (denial, steam rooms and smoothies instead of vaccine) means that we will rethink future destinations. For now we have booked a cottage in the Lakes in June for a change of scene and are crossing our fingers that it can go ahead. There are plenty of walks from the front door so we don't have to mix with people.
Just MOTed the camper and it only did a couple of hundred miles last year - our timing on that was less than ideal but hey ho. OH got a valuation on his car but couldn't bring himself to sell it even though we don't need it. DD is still home as uni won't let them back so we have more vehicles than people and none of them are moving much, except mine taking the dog to the vet every month.
We are being forced to take holiday - use it or lose it - so I think some more decorating will get done. I have enjoyed being able to go for a run when I feel like it during the time off - a taste of what retirement might offer.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

complete redecoration of the top floor of the house into husband's home office
The home office trend has also been a driver for the boom in home improvements. White van man has certainly been a Covid winner !

Ha...I read that as THE Home Office. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)2 -
I guess another new expenditure has been Netflix & Disney+ for us.
Already had Prime as a family (& Spotify - it's all about monthly outgoings now, eh!), but Disney+ came are precisely the right time - have good memories of doing the entire Marvel Universe (minus the one or two missing!), Jeff Goldblum's weird world and LOTS more.
Looking forward to those two chairs to make it more comfy in the film lounge now!Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!2 -
I find that we watch so many I end up forgetting what happened in the ones that I have already watched!shinytop said:
