Is there any way to track down a driver (registered keeper) of a vehicle without going through insurance and police?

Had my car scraped this morning whilst in the supermarket, right along my driver's door by some idiot trying to park up, I caught it all on dash cam so have the car details. Fortunately it looked far worse than it was and turned out just to be paint transfer, I managed to polish it out. Normally I'd just let it go but this is the third time in the past year where some numpty has hit my car and left without leaving any details and I don't want this guy to thinking he's got away with it.
I think the problem may be your parking.  Sounds like you're parking way too close to other cars or not central in the space.

And if it simply polished out, what are you looking for?  A refund for the polish you used?
Nothing wrong with my parking. Just seems to be a lot of idiots around who have no care of anybody else out on the road.

All I want from this is the satisfaction of being able to pull the guy up and let him know that you can't go around knocking into people's cars without any come back. Maybe he might take it on board and be a bit more careful in future. Nothing more sinister than that.
Oh really! So this is some sort of personal vigilant e justice you want to dish out rather than going through official channels.

I do not condone that at all , and yes it's very sinister that you want to trace someone through back door channels and then go knock on their door, what happens when the guy answers and he's a 6 foot monster you gonna be so gung ho then? Most people will tell you to eff off very impolitely and if you manage to get out of there without a scratch you should count yourself lucky

As this has done no damage to your car , simply chalk it up to one of the problems of today's driving standards and move on, more important things to worry about at the moment

Of course there's nothing stopping you parking in a quieter area of the carpark to protect your car
I think you're letting your imagination run wild with you.

And FYI, I had parked completely away from anyone, as I do most of the times.
Nope I'm giving you the most likely scenario based on you knocking on some guys door and getting in there face.
Please tell me where in any of my posts I said I was going to do this.

How did someone scrape you if you park away from everybody else especially as you had been unlucky enough to have had it done to you three times?
Just because you park in an empty area of the car park doesn't stop others from parking up next to you, in fact I find it's usually quite the opposite. Also, I never said this has happened three times in a supermarket car park either, One occasion I was parked up outside my house and probably hit by on of the many delivery vans that now come racing up and down our road these days.

“We (DVLA) can give you information (keepers details) for this purpose where ‘reasonable cause’ can be demonstrated.”

Given that you suffered minimal damage and there were no personal injuries I’d imagine your chance of obtaining the registered keepers details using form V888 would be slim, to say the least.

I could be wrong though,...I’ve been wrong before!

They won't. They'll tell you to go through insurance.
Insurance can access the other keeper's details, but will simply go through the MID insurer-of-record, who you can find out anyway.
  • Report to the police. Give them all the dash cam details. And they’ll head over at some point to give the RK a demand to identify the driver, and then the driver will likely get a fixed penalty.

    For what offence?

That's your problem.....park in the far corner of a carpark with 50 empty spaces around you and sods law when you come back someone's parked within half an inch of you door. Then when you look inside their car both front seats are pushed all the back indicating they are on the large side thus damaging you car when flinging the door open to waddle out, even worse if its got child seats in the back.

If you've got dashcam report them its irrelevant that you've tcut the damage away.....a letter/phone call/visit from plod might knock some sense into them......who knows they may have no insurance

It's weird that when you deliberately park in a space miles away from others with no other cars close to you and on foot you pass spaces between cars closer to the supermarket entrance.  Yet when you return to your car there is a car parked so close to your drivers door that you have to get in the passenger side and slide across.  Yet the area you are parked in isn't any more crowded than when you parked up.  Someone has deliberately parked right by you with a full choice of spaces around them and others even closer to the entrance.  It's not as rare an event as you might think.  People can be weird.

    There's nowt queer as folk.

Some vehicles become fretful and lonely when left in supermarket car-parks. Over the years these cars have developed a subliminal messaging system that makes the driver park close to other cars so they have a bit of company when their owners are shopping. The closer the better. They talk about the weather, paint jobs and Top Gear in the meantime.

Their behaviour changes somewhat when it comes to those brutal multi-storey car parks. They stick together because they are scared and there’s safety in numbers. The migration pattern of cars is a fascinating topic.

The police are unlikely to do anything, in fact the last time something similar happened I was told by the local plod that don't tend to get involved in cases like this because unless it was an obvious crash it can easily be argued that the driver may not have noticed and therefore not guilty of an offence. That previous time though they weren't insured or have any MOT and so ended up with 6 points and a large fine, this time around there is insurance in place.

    It is intentional.
They know that you care about your car and walked that bit further so as to be away from possible damage, and deliberately park like that so as to spread a bit of misery, and taint your day.

There are lots of people for whom actually going out of their way to cause misery for others gives them a warm and tingly feeling inside.

(Hanlon's Razor has it backwards IMHO :) )

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Close proximity parkers in a remote section of a car-park are known as ‘Fillers’ and there are several theories as to why they do it.

It’s possibly a way of saying “you parked your car farther away to protect it so I’ll park next to you to show my appreciation of your wise decision,  and by the way, I’ll take extra care not to ‘ding’ your car when I exit”.

In that way a remote section of the car-park can become an exclusive nucleation point for considerate drivers who see themselves as a cut-above all others.

Another nucleation site theory is that it’s somewhere for ‘Fillers’ to congregate. They believe there must be something "special" about that spot you've chosen and the ‘Fillers’ just want to be part of it.

I personally believe car-park Fillers are probably evil aliens in human-form. They’re intent on world car-park domination and they delight in pranging/scratching cars at every opportunity,...especially on Lidl’s car parks!  :s
