Yeah he's trying to call your bluff / put you off because he knows he's guilty.
  • Sounds like he's trying to rattle you.....as I said earlier if you have cctv/video of him driving past your car and then hear the impact that should be good enough
I'm not convinced about audio on commercial cctv as it's considered to be highly intrusive.
  • Most cars with 'wing mirrors' are in museums now.
I always wait for this kind of response whenever anyone refers to 'wing mirror'.

It makes me wonder if some people actually do scour the interweb forums for things to correct people on :D.

Gave you a freebie there ;)

They can't wait to pounce on "road tax", "car tax" either. It must feel very self satisfying to correct that.
Your username should really be 'oldagedtraveller' :)

Someone who cares about his livelihood would tax and insure his vehicle, and this guy has shown complete disregard for the law plus also tried to say it wasn't him and then never bothered to leave you a note owning up to it. Then when you tried to help him by keeping it out of the insurers, he isn't stumping up the cash for the repair work. One word: jerk.

I'd report it to the police and my insurer too, this guy's not doing the decent thing so why should you shoulder the cost and annoyance?

OP, if he's uninsured, then you're unlikely to get anything from him, especially if you report him to the police. Maybe a bit unfair, but he sounds like a dodgy self-employed scaffolder who doesn't believe in being legal. If it was me, I'd see if you can get the mirror cheaper, get as much as you can out of the culprit in return for not going through insurance or police, and get a local garage to fit the mirror. Even if you are a bit out of pocket, reporting him to police is likely to mean you get nothing.

No, but it would mean an untaxed/uninsured driver was on their radar and (ideally) being prosecuted.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

The police won't do anything, unless there's any issues with his tax/insurance or MOT, he can easily argue that he reasonably wouldn't have noticed the knock and therefore wouldn't be liable for any charges regarding leaving the scene etc. I had similar happen to me where a van parking up next to me caught and damage the corner of my front bumper. Like you I had caught it on dashcam where you could clearly hear a knock but this wasn't sufficient enough for charges to be brought, however the driver didn't have tax or insurance and ended up in court for that with 6 points and a £1,000 fine. Small mercies I suppose.
  • It's a shame that the note was anonymous. Could you not put out a request on social media for the anonymous person to contact you .. to act as a witness to the event? (Presumably they saw it happen, noted down the reg and left it on your car. If they're willing to provide a formal witness statement then it's a slam-dunk case; the CCTV etc. would merely be supporting evidence).
