Exactly, if he's already complaining about the cost of the part, you're going to have a battle to get him to part with any money over it.

If it's a new BMW why haven't you just gone direct to your BMW dealer for a quote? At the end of the day the cost of the new part is fixed so there's not much you can do about that, getting "opinions from other mechanics" isn't going to change that.

Which IMO is the only way to proceed.
To replace the door mirror may well involve the door trim and some of the internals having to be removed to accomplish the job and if a 3rd party independent garage was to do this and either cause more damage at the time or do something that lead to a snag in the future (such as with the central locking, electric windows or sound system), this could prove problematic if you tried to claim on the warranty and BMW stated it wasn't covered because of the work carried out by the non BMW garage.

A very expensive car, a very expensive bit to replace and not your fault in any way so stick to the manufacturer for the repair.
  • Update - Spoken to the lorry driver again this morning and told him it was either paying the costs or going via insurance.
He said he never actually admitted liability however as I was someone local, he was willing to pay £300-£400 just to settle it however as the price is more than £600 he said the only way he will pay the actual amount is by having actual proof of his truck hitting my car.

Looks like unless I can get the footage, he is going to play the card it wasn't him.
I don't have footage of him hitting the car, you can see him going past and you can just hear it in the video I have that there was impact to a car by some car.
I have requested footage from a carpark near by that shows a camera pointing towards my car but no  guarantee they will be able to obtain it...

    How should I proceed?

well it clearly was him ,going by what you've told us. so you've given him a chance to sort it, which is fair enough. next thing now is to tell your insurance company, and if they want to get the police involved so be it.

Firstly, get a quote from your local BMW dealer for the damage so you know exactly the costs you're going to be dealing with, and then inform your insurer. As an aside, I would also check his MOT and tax status.

This is why people don't own up to bumps. Everyone tries to get the most expensive repair that they can possibly get. A badge on the outside of a garage doesn't make it better at doing a job.

His calculation is a £600 part or:
Insurance excess and increased premiums for 5 years.
He is the victim, excess is not relevant.
Good luck with the increased premiym cost
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I would have thought the video you have would be enough for an insurance company but I don't think you'll have any luck with the car park they will quote data protection etc
