Broken Wing Mirror!

If they then say no then tell them that you will just have to go to the insurance/police with your evidence thenAll shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.2 -

Gave you a freebie there
They can't wait to pounce on "road tax", "car tax" either. It must feel very self satisfying to correct that.Yeah that's another favourite.I sit here thinking come on, REALLY? I know i can be a picky sod but we both know what we're talking about here. These people must have a field day with old folk. Many that i knew when DVDs started becoming more mainstream would still refer to them as 'tapes' and again when DVD recorders became a thing, the older people i knew would say 'taping' still.I knew what they were referring to so just accepted it. Maybe it was wrong of me and i should've lectured them instead?1 -
I have Sky Q, I still 'tape' programmes.1

Best report to 101 and then log a claim and give the insurance the crime number.0

My new parked car (BMW) that I have had since May 2020 was hit by a scaffold truck last Monday resulting in a damaged wing mirror (broken glass and cracked housing).
Using the anonymous note left on my windscreen with the number plate, CCTV footage from my house camera showing the truck going past my house and whilst not seeing but hearing the sound of impact and the power of social media, I was able to find the culprit at the weekend.
The driver initially tried to deny it was him but after seeing the footage and seeing the photo of his number plate, he admitted he heard the impact but thought it may have been the car behind him at the time.
He then said his reputation was very good in the area and an impact on it would be too big so he would pay and do the needful on getting it repaired. He also said it was best to go out of the insurance companies as he had previously had an impact on his insurance and would cause issues with his livelihood.
I took my car to a local reputable mechanic today and he called BMW direct to find the cost of a replacement mirror - £600 excluding labour!
I informed the driver of the cost and he said 'it was too much'. I said I would get a couple more opinions from other mechanics however how should I approach this situation?
On one side I am keen to just go via insurance however at the same time I don't want to be the cause of someone's livelihood being impacted.
I want to be fair as possible but at the same time not risk any complications getting this resolved.

Would be better added to the previous thread on the subject.
Anyway, get 3 quotes as you plan to (include BMW as a reference point) then present to the driver and give a fixed time for him to pay before you go to insurance route. Mention that the insurance company may report to police for failure to stop at accident and, if the insurance company do that, it is out of your hands.0 -
Don't count on him paying up. Him saying 'it was too much' should tell you this is going nowhere. Just report it all to your insurer.

His calculation is a £600 part or:
Insurance excess and increased premiums for 5 years.0
