Out of interest, what is the coat?  If you've got a respose from them that you are happy with (and possibly above and beyond what they needed to do) you may as well give them a free plug
Thanks, I will do as soon as my vouchers arrive.🙂

I bought a new coat online a couple of weeks ago, costing £200. I wore it yesterday for only the second time to go shopping. it has large buttons on the pockets. Sadly as I was bending over the supermarket trolley the coat button must have got stuck in the mesh of the trolley, I then moved and the button flew off making a huge tear right across the patch pocket.  I can’t see how I can repair it.

I know some will say it’s my fault but it’s a casual coat and one you might expect to wear when shopping.  Anyway, I contacted the firm and they say it’s not a manufacturing fault.  However, I have looked at a couple of other similarly priced coats I own and they both  have their buttons sewn on with an elastic thread or they have a shank at the back of the button so it  has some “give”.  All the buttons on my new coat are sewn on so tightly and with no shank that it was inevitable that, if caught,  it would rip the fabric right open.  I am also surprised that the pocket is just a single layer of cotton fabric, not reinforced or doubled.  I have been a customer of theirs for many years so am disappointed at their response to be honest.
    Shall I try again?

£200 for a casual coat?. They saw you coming.
Seasalt, White Stuff, Barbour, Hobbs .... all do coats in this price range.  Even M and S are heading that way.  It’s my money and I can spend it how I like, having worked very hard for it.  I usually buy the best I can afford in clothes and shoes because they last for years but am equally happy with a good quality item from a charity shop.  I have a fabulous pure wool coat I bought in a charity shop last winter for £12 and it was still in the shops for £275, that was Masai label  and is now my special occasion coat.  I have bought loads of clothes from the company in question and have always been pleased with them but on this occasion I was disappointed and told them so and they seem to have listened.

The power of the MSE forums strike again.
Within a day of the poster not getting the answers they wanted, the company change their mind and offer a goodwill gesture.

It seems to happen quite often.
It was better than that, it was within just hours!  I didn’t expect a reply so soon so didn’t check my emails until this morning but they were only hours apart.  As I said earlier, I am glad they took on board my comments and even if it’s only a token voucher I am happy with that.

Thank you pattycake for your suggestion about invisible mending.
It's an (almost) Christmas miracle! What are the odds of yet another OP getting the result they wanted within hours of coming on here after being told the reality of the situation by other posters.
The power of MSE should not be underestimated, particularly when the responses of those with any post count (more than 1) all agree that an OP is in the wrong.  I always think that any OP in this sort of situation should also buy a lotto ticket.  This usually happens/gets resolved on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.  The best ones happen on a Bank Holiday - actually the very best happen over an extended Bank Holiday.

    When did this one happen....
I wore it and damaged it on Thursday and emailed the company the same day.  I posted on here on Friday, sent a second more detailed email and received a reply the same day.  I call that good customer service.  Sorry if it doesn’t suit your cynical agenda.
Absolutely.  All very tidy and certainly worth a plug for the company in normal times let alone in current times.

If your coat cost £200 then it wasn't purchased from two of the companies that you named as neither Sea Salt or White Stuff sell coats/ jackets at that price point.

    Snide?  Re read them.

You have had an absolutely amazing result - a company have given you vouchers for a coat that you damaged - within hours of complaining.  Just one part of that resolution would be worthy of praise but you've had a double whammy.

Seasalt may not sell coats at £200 but they do sell them at £150.
White Stuff's most expensive coat is £160 so within the OP's parameters.

I didn’t say it was from any of those retailers.  As some people were claiming that £200 was excessive to spend on a coat, I was pointing out that many companies sell coats in the £150-£200 price range although why I have to justify how I spend my money is beyond me.

Thank you Pollycat. At least someone on here can read and understand!  I mentioned the price of the coat because for that money I had expected it to be very good quality.  Had  it been my £9.99 emergency waterproof from Primark that ripped after a couple of wearings I would not have started this thread.

You don't have to justify what you spend your money on - though it would be nice to hear which brand showed such good customer service. I was simply pointing out that, as your coat was £200, it wasn't from those two brands. Of the five brands you named - White Stuff, Sea Salt, Hobbs, Barbour and M&S - I actually own jackets from all bar Barbour and they're all ones I wear for "everyday", though I would say that the Hobbs and M&S ones are far better made than the other two.
