I would suggest that the buyer's coat wasn't of poor quality, but perhaps overpriced, and therefore not meeting their expectation. Although I'm sure we would be hearing complaints about how easily buttons fall off £200 coats if they weren't sewn on so tightly.
From what I've read from the OP, I would suggest that the coat was of poor quality. Certainly in comparison to other similarly priced coats owned by the OP.
But it's fine not to agree with my opinion. ;)

Maybe if she bought a coat from Primark, she would - like Lada owners - have more tolerance to its faults.

WOW. I hope the OP has decided to ignore these pages of 'advice'. Some of which is totally unnecessary but very insulting.

What do you find insulting about what has been posted?
Surely if a coat tears so easily, it must be poor quality. My general day to day coat (a Timberland one) is about 10 years old and gets used when I'm gardening and walking my dogs (often through wooded areas) and it's not showing any damage at all let alone a "huge tear" caused by simply snagging a button.

The OP is at liberty to take or ignore any advice posted.

FTR, the comment I made was in direct response to someone who compared a Rolls Royce car to a Lada and surmised why the 2 different categories of owners might have different expectations of quality.

Do you disagree that the OP appears to be unhappy about the quality of her new coat in comparison to the other similarly priced coats she owns?

I think the Lada owner will have had the last laugh because they are expensive now.

I sent a second email to the company  saying that although it was an accident and therefore my fault  I felt that a high quality coat (and they say they pride themselves on the high quality of their clothes) should not have ripped apart like it did after just a button getting caught.  Actually Wikipaedia backs up what I said .... that good quality clothes either have a second button sewn on the back, they have a special shank  or they use elasticated thread so there is some “give”.  I also said that I felt a pocket should be lined and not just a single layer thick.

They passed my email higher up and have come back and said as a gesture of goodwill they will send me some vouchers so I am happy with that. May only be a fiver for all I know but at least they have taken on board what I said.  Meantime I have to try and do some sort of repair on the coat and also remove buttons from pockets in case it happens again.

For those who say they would never go shopping in a £200 coat, why not?  I buy a coat to wear not to hang in the wardrobe.   I buy good quality coats that last for years (normally, 😂😂😂) and £150-£200 is the price that places like Seasalt, White Stuff etc are all asking this season.  I have loads of old charity shop coats I buy for dog walking etc and nothing ever happens to them. Typical!

    Because I don't own a £200 coat to go shopping in. 😂😂😂
I too buy coats to wear but I wear them in situations that make sense to me.
A new coat would be worn when I went out socialising.
An older coat would be worn when shopping.

Glad to hear that you're pleased with the outcome.
I really does sound like you thought the coat wasn't of the quality you expected.

It’s just a parka style casual coat not a special occasion coat.  I AM pleased with the outcome and, as you say, although it looks good quality and I love it, it is not up to the standard I would expect.

Within a day of the poster not getting the answers they wanted, the company change their mind and offer a goodwill gesture.

It seems to happen quite often.

Where I live, there is an independent tailor who undertakes alterations and repairs.  Unless you are proficient with a needle and thread, why not find out if the coat can be ‘invisibly mended’.  Worth paying for a professional job on a coat costing £200.

It was better than that, it was within just hours!  I didn’t expect a reply so soon so didn’t check my emails until this morning but they were only hours apart.  As I said earlier, I am glad they took on board my comments and even if it’s only a token voucher I am happy with that.

Thank you pattycake for your suggestion about invisible mending.
