Can I return a faulty tablet after 18 months?

I visited an independent technician as I was asked. I went back to them yesterday and in their report it mentioned that there’s a manufacturing fault with something technical to do with my iPad display.photome said:

£480 new does not equate to £420 or "over £400" at 16 months old.Anteater23 said:
Well considering had I bought a non-faulty iPad in the first place that I would now be in a position to sell it for over £400, it would feel very unfair to get less.Manxman_in_exile said:Anteater23 said:If Argos offer me a pro-rata refund, how much am I entitled to?How much would you be willing to pay to buy a used, 17 month old iPad that is the same as the one you have?I wouldn't be happy accepting less than £200, would be satisfied with £250, and delighted (and pleasantly surprised) with £300.There is no formula.
Manxman says no less than £200 and would be delighted at £300.
I would not pay more than £100
What Manxman or I think is irrelevant.
One option you have is to forget Argos altogether and get a price from the trade-in sites. That would be some initial guide. You could even sell to them and then buy whatever replacement you wish for on Black Friday.

I don’t know if you missed my message. But the EXACT same iPad as I own sold for £421 yesterday as a used product on eBay. And others are selling in the same price range.Grumpy_chap said:

So if Argos can’t source me a replacement then I’ll have to buy a used one for over £400. If Argos give me £100 then that’s hardly fair as it puts me £300 + out of pocket0 -
There's little point arguing over pricing with people here, what matters is what Argos think. You have an independent report, you have a nominal used value, so go back to Argos and ask them whether they would like to repair, replace or refund you £421. Their response will either be satisfactory to you or not.1

You’re right. I’ll send my letter to Argos tomorrow. One thing? Is it worth mentioning all this to Argos in my letter and saying my preferred outcome or just wait to hear what they said and negotiate from there?Aylesbury_Duck said:There's little point arguing over pricing with people here, what matters is what Argos think. I don’t really like buying used goods but the going rate for my iPad (used but in good condition) is ~ £420Manxman_in_exile said:Anteater23 said:If Argos offer me a pro-rata refund, how much am I entitled to?How much would you be willing to pay to buy a used, 17 month old iPad that is the same as the one you have?I wouldn't be happy accepting less than £200, would be satisfied with £250, and delighted (and pleasantly surprised) with £300.There is no formula.0 -

Yes, I saw your message and referenced the same in commenting about £420 - sorry if my rounding was too complex for you.
But we also now know that you purchased with a staff discount:
So, was the £480 the retail price or the price after discount?Anteater23 said:I used to work for a company (around 2 years ago) and using the colleague discount I bought a tablet for personal use.
FWIW, I agree with @cymruchris that the restriction on reselling does not apply after 16 months and you can go ahead and sell the iPAD. Which seems to be your best bet - no hassle with Argos, you get £421 for the iPAD originally purchased at £480, so it has only cost you £60 to have the use of the tablet for well over a year. Bargain.0 -
Thanks for your opinion on that matter. That was the price before discount. The reason for that thread was so I could use the current value on eBay as a way of reasoning with Argos about how much I think I should be refunded. But the company has gotten back to me and said “bought goods are never for resale even if used and 2 years later”. So I guess they could say it doesn’t matter what my iPad is worth as I’m not entitled to sell it but if they then give me terrible offer then when I go to buy a replacement I’ll be so out of pocketGrumpy_chap said:Anteater23 said:
