All you lot with your orchards
I looked at the pick an apple tree for your area website, sorry can't remember who posted it
It basically told me not to bother
I have mates in East Anglia who have peach trees, plum trees, figs outside!!
And I can't even grow an apple tree
I bought a Little Miss Figgy (bad influences on here) and put it in the greenhouse, looks quite dead but I will wait patiently7 -
If you'd like to grow an apple, there's some Scottish heritage varieties which can probably cope with most weathers?

I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.6 -
We stayed 'almost' dry today. I planted more hornbeam infill in the elm hedge before lunch. Then, in the afternoon, Mrs Dusty helped me tackle the last section of elm with the chain saw. We came close to finishing, but it's not the sort of job to do in poor light.
One more session will see the work done, and I won't be sorry!
I was going to take a few Moon photos as night fell, but Woolly the cat (not her 'proper' name) stole the show by walking along the top of the elm hedge framework, silhouetted against the western sky. She obviously thinks the work has been done for her ease of movement! She wouldn't stay still enough for a silhouette shot, so I used the flash instead. She looks like Lady Muck up there!
In a few weeks time, new branches will be sprouting at speed. Some roots go 30 or more feet across the garden, so there's a massive below-ground infrastructure."There is no such thing as a low-energy rich country." Dr Chris Martenson. Peak Prosperity8 -

Hopefully the Sunset apple will do well Farway - one of my most reliable varieties, despite being very inexpertly trained as a sort of espalier in the rainshadow of an outbuilding and planted in a hole excavated pretty much into bedrock... (at least 15 years ago, and still surviving)... Not a big cropper, hardly surprising given conditions, but some fruit every year (nearly 40 in 2022, though not so good last year), tasty and juicy...

I have a,theory Imp that treat em mean and keep em keen may be the way to go.
My plum was dug up, heeled in for a while, planted, dug up and heeled in then planted again.....It's covered in buds for 5yrs now.
My greengage that was treated like a treasure gave up the ghost in a couple of years.
Lets hope so because my little peach tree which I read should not have rain on it is out there in 3c and torrential rain.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on
The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

Aww 2p will your little peach tree be ok? Could you fling a big carrier bag over it..?
I don't know about being a tough nut, but I always think of Cissie - would she be sat in her jamas still at 0930 complaining she was snotty and coughing? No? Well then what makes me so special that I deserve cossetting? So I got dressed and off I went to Scarborough. I'm pleased I did too cos it was a beautiful day and I got some good pics. I'll pick a couple and put them on here. I'm getting backed up with good photos tbh, if I put them all on here I'd be told off for there'd be pages of them ha haa!
Pas d'ya wanna go of my ska tree? It's a big enough size that it shouldn't die on you.. well not immediately anywayAre you somewhere desperately windy, is that why you're treeless (so far)?
Those were good links Farway, I thought the box down the left hand side explained things well. How long 'til you're sitting eating sun-warmed apples and cherries do you think?
You'll be glad to see the back of that job will you Dusty. Mind kittykat looks impressed enough
Yep Red Fox is cheese pp, bluddy lovely it is too. Agree about the cheese'n'chive combo they doand have you seen the white stilton with cranberries? That's bluddy lovely too but you don't often see it. Doesn't freeze as well as the Fox but it keeps well past it's date in the fridge.
Well it's a good autumnal sunny cold morning here and a good frost with it. I got a pic of the moon this morning but I think I missed it being full. Even though it's not especially rare there's something beautiful about the moonset and sunrise occurring together I think. I hope you suvveners don't get as much rain as they've forecast today :fingerscrossed:I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.6 -
Ok, home and away. Moon this morning, and my apple and pear from yesterday. Definite movement thereI removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.7

Away. Gorse plus something, looking out to sea.A something-I’ve-forgotten-what tree. I got talking to the woman cos her dog was an absolute beauty (proper lab) and she was telling me about it. It took her ages to get the height and shape of it right. I can't remember what she said it is, I thought it looked like heather. This made me smileI could put up a dozen more, but that'll do.I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.8

The above was said in jest because the website mentioned did actually say not to bother
I am not far from your mate but there can be huge differences in weather over quite short distances
Not unusual for places 30 miles or less from me to be in the news for being the hottest place in Scotland or even Britain while I am enjoying 15 degrees
It gets bitterly cold in my garden and stays that way for months due to the low winter sun not touching the ground
Anything which buds early in the year usually ends up getting frozen
And as YBE guessed it gets very windy here, frequently
I had snow through to April last year, not constant but that makes it worse because a warm spell wakes plants up and they then get frozen again
Greenhouse hit minus 4 last night so outside will have been colder
I don't even eat apples but I would love a peach tree, well done to your mate7
