Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Missed taking any 'frosty morn' pictures at 08.30, but I think the -4c prediction was accurate, judging by the ice on the mini-ponds. Even the hens were reluctant to go outside and peck up their morning treat. So, in the absence of any winter pictures, here's a bird that visits every year around now and at no other times. Not being really experienced twitchers, we're not sure if it's a Tree or Meadow Pippit, but maybe someone will know. Sorry, not the most brilliant photo; I had to just grab one while I could.3

Cold, frosty & sunny, which would be ideal for penguins except they are dying from 'flu at nearby Marwell, poor little blightersNo gardening today, too cold for my gouty bent paws, I've just bought a second hand years old camera so may try for long lens garden shots as it is a digital descendant of my old 35 mm film camera & my old film lenses work with itDigital cash, you'll have to include me in the conspiracy nut pile, I'm afraid, all very handy until your views or actions do not comply with current thinkingOne to watch is carbon credits, on the way soonEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens1

I find people don’t challenge you if you say something with a bit of authority and force. Not sure that’s a good thing actually. I was raised to be curious about and interested in the world, and not blindly accept something just because a Big Boy said it. I was in no end of trouble at school, Father was so proud! I’m fact, the only time he went to parent’s evening was to reprimand a teacher for telling me off (ex prison governor - he had authority and force in spades).I digress. It’s a good thing I’ve no job, now there’s carbon credits to go on my duckduck list!I don’t know what your wee bird is woolsery, pretty little thing tho eh.Looking forward to pics from your old/new camera Farway 😊I had a hen who could count her own eggs - she was a mathemachicken.1

Good afternoon. A second night of frost here too. The CH thermostat said 15 degrees downstairs this morning. I moved all my house plants away from the windows last night just in case - too many - they multiplied when I wasn't looking
I tentatively gave notice to the landlord last night. My house in Devon is sold - mixed feelings but head has to rule heart. Whatever happens I'm on my way back to Devon in the spring, in fact I'm going for Christmas too. I can't wait, six months looking after mum turned into 5 years but no regrets. If my plans go pear shaped I'll be looking for a handy field in which to pitch my tent @Woolsery
So my 'garden centre' of plants bought but not planted can stay in their pots for now. I finally have time to plant 6 packets of bulbs but it's too frosty. I might put them in tubs instead.
It must be cold. My house is next to a huge business. During the winter months, I suppose when the workmen don't see me out and about, a couple of them knock on the door to check I'm OK and to ask about mum if they'd seen a paramedic. I give them bits from the garden. They knew about mum because the traffic was stopped to let the hearse by. Today they brought round a small donation - I was so touched! And they will continue to collect milk and bread if I leave my sign outside. Some genuinely kind people I shall miss.
Beautiful sunny day now with clear blue sky. I might sweep leave from the gravel paths. They sweep well when the stones are frozen and the leaves are crispLove living in a village in the country side4 -
Woolsery said:Farway said:Woolsery, nice jumble pic, I recognise the "trawler" on the right, my FIL made similar model, presumably using same plans, it's with DD now.If I remember correctly, there was a catalogue called Hobbies that came out just before Christmas and the plans could be ordered from that, along with all the twiddly bits like small scale chandlery etc....Ah, it still exists:https://www.hobbies.co.uk/the-2023-hobbies-handbook-catalogueThere's always a good range of old garden tools at the back of that stall. No bargains, though! One thing I recognised was a display for Lady Neilson ice cream in the form of a wheelbarrow. As a child, I remember thinking of this aristocratic lady wafting about the ice cream factory somewhere in Canada, supervising quality control.
It wasn't quite like that, but the ice cream was pretty good! http://www.lostrivers.ca/points/Cadbury.htm
6d? A quarter of a week's pocket money! It was another fine and cold day here. I'm almost up-to-date with the mowing now. This dry interlude has been a blessing after the grass got away from me in all that rain.Planning a walk for Friday, but I've just seen the forecast and long Johns might not be enough!

There are two fields to choose from and very basic 'facilities' in the barn if it comes to that, but you've sold at exactly the right time, so I think you'll be fine.Ganga said:Woolsery said:Farway said:Woolsery, nice jumble pic, I recognise the "trawler" on the right, my FIL made similar model, presumably using same plans, it's with DD now.If I remember correctly, there was a catalogue called Hobbies that came out just before Christmas and the plans could be ordered from that, along with all the twiddly bits like small scale chandlery etc....Ah, it still exists:https://www.hobbies.co.uk/the-2023-hobbies-handbook-catalogueThere's always a good range of old garden tools at the back of that stall. Managed to do a 'proper' walk today, almost at the seaside. Although it was only a few miles and the tide was out, the weather was gloriously sunny and calm for a couple of hours. We didn't even need our woolly hats.2 -
You'll not know what to do with yourself wellies, and then in a few weeks you'll look back and think "my god, is that a year gone?!"
Good luck with the house hunting and movingI had a hen who could count her own eggs - she was a mathemachicken.2 -

OH no Woolsery, snow. I heard on the weather this morning, the West Country "may get snow". Hope the same doesn't happen here because they mentioned a possible "unique event" where this side may get buried under snow in next few days, watch this spaceNice to see you have shipwrecks, I've a very similar wrecked boat picture taken in a tidal creek near hereGood house hunting IMW, some hard choices ahead I guess, house & then garden or vice versa?Very hard frost this morning, I comfort myself with the knowledge that the fruit trees need a hard frosty spell to get them in the mood for fruiting next yearThe frost gave me a chance to brave the cold & nip out the front to try out the new old camera, need more practice but here's one of frosty rimmed ivy on the Council's wallEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens6
