Bright & sunny morning, forecast is first real frost tonight so I'll have a quick look just in case I've left anything tender out side the back door. Plus move the coleous cuttings back from the windows in conservatory, I may even bring one indoors as a safey net and bit of cheer over Christmas, sort of red & green Christmas colours anyway

Glorious day here. There was frost on the ground at the volunteer site; down in the valley almost north facing. So the grass was a bit wet when I started working. Amazed at how little damage there was to plants on the polytunnels. Abandoned my coat shortly after and have not yet put it back on.

Spent the time uprooting some hedging plants we lined out a couple of years ago because they were too small, but were unable to relocate last year. They've doubled in size this year and are now located in the gaps in the hedge which is starting to mature nicely.

The broad beans planted 6 weeks ago are now a good 10 cm high and we know from experience that they cope with the sort of minus eleven winter we had last year and give a good early harvest. Winter onions also doing well, but the garlic is barely showing.

Cold but dry and sunny. Still didn't do more than watering and not all of that.
Thanks for the reminder about broad beans. I have seed and room this year so I must get on with it. It's mild in this part of the world so I may get away with it.

  • Bloomin' cold here for the last few days. The farmer who looks after the water meadows that are on my regular morning walk was chopping the one nearest the river short yesterday morning so I could see this family of roe deer.

Here's a close up of the three in the middle.

They're very aware of the humans and dogs walking along the path around the edge of the meadow and whenever I stopped to take a photograph they'd drift further away.

    goldfinches

They are incredibly alert but seem to be moving more and more into town. I spotted some in May in the field next to a large public park. And we had fun getting one to leave the allotments a bit before that; she'd got in but didn't seem to work out how to leave.

twopenny, we find that Valenciana grows really well over the winter, often flowing in February. In fact some sown early in the autumn flowered on October. It does seem to flower lower down and not produce new buds at the top of the plant once it starts to set pods, but is a heavy cropper anyway. So the tops are good for greens as well if picked early.

Windy and showers, some heavy but not expecially cold thanks to the wind direction.
Still not enough to tempt me into the garden!
I notice the birds are starting to come around looking for food but not taking it. I'm going to have to move the bird table again. They don't like the way it's facing at the moment but I'm running out of options with altering the garden to suit me.
Cheering photos everyone. I notice I have a new rose on my Gertrude Jeykle if it hasn't been blown away. Lovely for mid winter.
The Blush Noisette that everyone likes climbing round my gate trellis is covered in buds - just right for Christmas. It's full of leaves too. Thinking of getting another to go out the back as it really has everything you look for where the others are 'picky'
Broad Bean variety noted. So little here before Christmas, it's all about singing reindeer and overpriced bulbs.

The storm seems to have passed me by unscathed, just dull, wet & windy. Like 2P, not enough to get me out there today even though I bet there are some loveley Autumn Leaves photos around

Still blowing a hoolie but not quite as strong as last night or this morning; under 40mph by a guess. Lots of sleet hammering the window overnight and the park was white. Now thawed somewhat.

The empty recycling bin was down the road, so it can't go anywhere.

Hoping the geraniums I hadn't brought in survive. They are in a sheltered spot.

Thank you 2p and Farway, I’ll still a bit of feed on the bulbs and see what happens.
the wind was bad last night, and whilst I went to see if the cat wanted to come back in before I went to bed, I spotted the wicker Robin had fallen over with the cyclamen in it. So I brought it indoors , I only had a couple of hours sleep as I could hear the wind under the roof tiles! Up early for work very cold and still windy , but definitely quieter.
