Bon voyage to the intrepid travellers off on their holibbobs, now or pretty soon.
My experience of rough crossings is limited, but up by the funnels worked best for me. It was the only time I can recall of not finishing my beer.
Mrs Dusty is off gallivanting today too. She'll be heading your way,2p, for a ride on the steam train. It's just as well she's not going south, as a transporter full of EVs has been on fire on the M5, and there's associated bedlam. Apparently, the pall of toxic smoke could be seen for miles, but thankfully not from here, where it's currently grey, windless and about 14c.
Farway said:Seems the rain, yellow and normal, may not get down here, just windy pops.Talking of work, my youngest DGS starts PT at Sainbugs soon, he is "thinking" about University, or not.His Dad, my DS, is not having him lolling around on Gap nonsense while he makes his mind upI feel for the younger ones these days, umpteen applications & rejections, disheartening. At least it's a start and he may hate it, but it's all experience, and staff discount on the bright sideI foresee a big shock to a young lad, real work, no doubt lifting & shifting beans on & off of shelves, only to find after week that our Rachel takes a chunk of your pay.According to something I read somewhere, Gen Z are getting ideas above their station aided by those in higher education, so they hit the world of work with the wrong attitude. But hang-on, many of them would surely have experienced work before and during their enlightenment, like your GDS is about to do? I recall the butcher's round I did for a while, aged 11or12, and serving in my parents' shop from 13 onwards. Then, there was working for Mr T at 16, which educated me in new ways..but I think I've alluded to that before!
As you say, it was all experience; some good, some hair-raising. I suppose they may be suggesting, once that certificate and the right to hire a funny hat and cape is awarded, the young persons think they've been magically imbued with added value. Some work is then 'beneath' them.
Hmmm...Well, when I left uni, my first job was crawling about under machines on a factory floor, attending to hydraulic leaks and plastic spills. That was because I urgently needed more money than the 'proper' job I'd qualified for would provide a new entrant. I'm sure that sort of situation still applies too!
Was it a case of "Love me, love my banana plant" 2p?Erk! Quoting went wrong somehow!Just say, "No!"5 -

And free cyclamen 🙂 I've found they dawdle around for ages then suddenly spread. Great value plants blooming on dull days and need no care.Until you named [and shamed] them I did not know they were fruit flies. I'd lumped them under "Gnats"But, now it all makes sense, they are everywhere it seems. On the bright side,it's better than the rats I hadI'll try a cider vinegar trap and see how goesLooking forward to the free cyclamen suddenly spreading, .like fruit flies?Dustyevsky said:According to something I read somewhere, Gen Z are getting ideas above their station aided by those in higher education, so they hit the world of work with the wrong attitude. A lot of them spent years, and money, on getting a degree in journalism, and now along comes Chat AI to do them out of the job they never hadThe programme likened it it to the 80s, but back then it was Blue Collar manufacturing that took the hit and we were told we had to get on our bikes

Chinese Money Plant - thanks, Taff, I'll look out for it. The leaves remind me of Nasturtiums.
Fruit flies are a beggar this year, by all accounts. I've seen other posters mentioning them and being unable to get rid. I think there was a BBC report on them too.
We still don't know if we're travelling at the weekendLooking at the weather forecast I'd say not, but the ferry people haven't decided yet. We've had a 'you might not be travelling' text, but I think it's going to be a last minute cancellation. We've got a provisional ferry booking for a day later, but we'll lose out on one night accommodation. We do have travel insurance, but I think there's an excess to pay. Anyway, ginger nuts have been purchased, so I'm all set.
OT - we've had rain all day and it's due to get worse tomorrow and into the weekend.'A watched potato will never chit'...5 -
Been out cleaning, tidying, trimming out the front as well as filling the pot holes in the garden door and my back is killing me so good excuse to stay on the sofa tonight 😁
Trying to get as much done as possible as there's a slight chance of rain at the weekend.
Brassicas are failing again and I pulled a non fruiting tomato out of the ground and it was dust again.
Poppy I hope your ferry runs. It's not the same when plans are interrupted.
No fruit flies today?? But I did find mossies hanging around a wet bucket. I'd rather have fruit flies 😵💫
Interested how the vinegar trap turns out Farway.
Heard the train tooting while I was out front.
I thought 'Mrs Dusty is back safe and sound 😁I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Morning all
Yep 'Alice' is a good'un, she's impressed nearly everyone at work. She's yet to properly meet BBM but I think she'll hold up. Well she's been formally introduced, but it'll be good to see how she copes with the day-to-day BBM. If I dare say it - she was raised by her grandparents and I reckon that's what's made her. She's deffo a keeper. And yes it's good to not have to use 'they' in the singular - it was making my brain hurt
I'm glad your pears were worth the bother Farway, better than your red jobbers then eh. Good luck to DGS 🤞🏻 I predict he'll do rightly. What was he thinking of for uni?
Safe travels to Germania taff ✈️ The land of eat drink and be merry 😋
I hope your ferry/hollibob comes good pp ⛴️even if it is a day short. Can you make it a day longer at the other end so it evens out...?
I hope MrsD had a good day on the choo chooooo 🚂 Dusty?
Did your night on the sofa 🛋️ sort you out 2p? You don't need a dicky back on top if it all.
Pics - I can do it all in one go now ha haa! Always a bright side.
It did rain yesterday morning after the sun came up, so here's a couple of pics
I bought more cyclamen at the weekend, for they're a lovely colour. Is AI naming stuff now is it..? Well I lifted 2 of them anyway, despite the name.My husband told me to stop speaking in numbers, but I don't 1 2.6 -

I thought 'Mrs Dusty is back safe and sound 😁Yes, she had a great day, thanks, 2p and Bluey, though the cream tea didn't agree with her. I can't understand that, because she's never liked cream, so maybe it was part of the all-in deal, and she felt it would be a waste!I'll find out later.
While Mrs D was off on the girls' day out, I had one last go at the thistles and brushcut half the streamside grass, ready to do more planting there. I also prepped a small bed for the leeks, which have been sitting far too long, waiting to go in.The ones in the polytunnel bed have done OK, but they seem to have stopped growing....they were rammed-in a bit tight!
Finally, I managed a quick visit to our partner farmer with those dumpy bags of apples for his piggies. He already had about 8 sacks of someone's grubbed-out runner beans, so those porkers are going to enjoy their lunch today! It was good having different view of the sunset, albeit watery, so I took it. Not as pretty as Bluey'sIt was calm and peaceful yesterday, with little, if any, breeze. That's not what we're expecting later today, but it doesn't appear the approaching wind and rain are expected to be extreme down here, or last for long.Funny you should purchase a cyclamen yesterday, Bluey. That's what Mrs D brought home from her trip. It was a pack of 4, from Morries (not the one in your area 2p!) and cost a very reasonable £3.50. They weren't even looking fjordwards either, Farway! However, apparently, Morries is rubbish for potential hedgehog food.
That rainbow looks appropriate Bluey. I bet the developers made a mint! Here's hoping the one over my van has the same effect....Caught Robin yesterday for pp, but alas, not in full song:Just say, "No!"6 -
I love the robin pics, that one looks so soft I want to stroke it.
Happy hols to those off now ,just a week till mine 🤗
My dgson has just finished college, he did a course that included finding a work placement, then the evenings and weekends were spent in the supermarket stacking and filling. The work place kept him on when he passed. Now he’s just doing weekends at the SM . He’s hoping to finish there soon. He’s worked hard and will miss the discount !YBE glad the newbie is working out. Lovely sunrise there , we had the rain yesterday morning, and this morning is bright and sunny. Tuesday was also sunny but was in big city again with dgson at the dentist. We need to go back in 2 weeks. 😩 I’m hopeful he will get a good result after the trauma of the attack, and the teeth looking good is less of a physical reminder of what happened.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.3 -

Dull start, hope for a spot of sun later, then I must, no really must, get the pansies in before it tips down on SaturdayLooking at this morning's weather forecast, your break seems doomed, PP. I'm not sure if I'd prefer "cancelled" to "memorable"Anyway, whatever the result, I hope it is enjoyable. As a fellow back suffer, do take care 2P, I spent a painful fortnight when my back packed in.YoungBlueEyes said:If I dare say it - she was raised by her grandparents and I reckon that's what's made her. I bought more cyclamen at the weekend, for they're a lovely colour. Is AI naming stuff now is it..? Well I lifted 2 of them anyway, despite the name.Uni & thinking are opposites for DGS at the moment, he has no idea at all, but I was the same at his age, however, unlike today's fodder, we had lots of jobs to walk into. There were always jobs as Capstan Lathe Turners, I never really found out what one was, it seemed exciting at 16, but bet it wasn't.I've just looked it up, phew, seems I had a narrow escape there"well-suited for repetitive tasks"One job that must have vanished early on with CNC machining. Can you imagine, years of forty hour weeks on some repetitively boring & oily machine turning out screws, then replaced one Friday by a paper ribbon with holes in it.Cracking photos again, the sunrises here are mediocre just latelyAnd, just refreshed, Autumn pics to envy there Wort.I do have hopes for some fungus fotos, phungus photos if you prefer. There's clump next door, but I need a tele lens to get close enough. Job for this afternoonNice fat piggies on Dusty apples, I heard on radio the New Forest pigs have just been turned out for the bumper acorn crop. One year I did buy some NF acorn fed pork, apart from it being very ethical, free-range, organic, local etc I don't think the cost justified it for me, not that cost stops me, I love the FR piggies from the GC Olde Farm Shoppe, but they are not acorn finished.Numerus non sum4
