Farway said:Update on horticultural DGD, currently she is near Aberdeen but finishes end of this monthThen, back to Mum's to get washing done
before she goes off to University of Gloucester, her course is Ecology & Environmental Science BSc Hons, based in Cheltenham bit of Uni.
She is wanting to work in conservation within horticulture, which sounds very posh. She'll notice winter climate improvement, for sure.I wish I could have my uni time over again. The institution was chosen solely on the basis that it was rural, there was a farm within the site, a walled garden, and a couple of fishy-looking lakes.
Those were truly excellent selection criteria. I only fell at the hurdle of what to do there.
I'm still unsure exactly what it was, but then, it was the 70s.
A friend made in term 1 seemed to think he'd made a mistake. He literally disappeared after Christmas, and no one knew where he'd gone. A couple of us were worried we might have locked him in a cupboard as a drunken party prank, but there was a happier reason; he'd transferred to a horticultural college. He retired a few years ago, having overseen many major improvements to a famous Westcountry garden....lucky devil!
After drizzly rain and wind all morning, the weather's moderated here, just in time for me to trek down to a local town and read magazines while we have some tyres fitted.Yes, we did achieve an MoT only last week, but the garage man made me swear I'd have the Bong-hos on the back replaced with something roadworthy.

Rain has arrived, so def not gardening today. The real hoolie misses me tonight, mostly, I'm too far sarf but with the tree still full of leaves no doubt it will be fallen trees tomorrow.Fence repair & sellers rubbing hands and booking the World cruises already, I imagineHope you managed to get those fruits netted 2P, so annoying to watch them grow only to see them vanish, and may they have strong stalks for tonight's windsI never considered rats eating fruit, but of course now I think of it they'll eat anything. I have enough problems from tree rats, aka squirrels.LessImpecunious said:Congrats to DGD Farway - I have two DC (is that a thing?) + one DSIL living in Gloucester, two of them alumni of Gloucester Uni (the not-so-posh Gloucester campus tho!)...maybe they will have an encounter... Could begin counting degrees of separation amongst posters to the thread, what with WM and YBE being practically neighbours n allFor instance, I am 42 degrees from Eric the Red and 17 from Charles Darwin and 20 from Queen VictoriaHooray for your MOT Dusty, always an expense there.DS has a Mazda which apparently requires special Iridium spark plugs, the sort where the garage owner's eyes light up at the thought of selling them. And the mechanic sucks his teeth when you ask the price for a full set of them.Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens7

The cake covers have stood up to the rain and wind Farway but I'm just back from town where they use those fruit nets to display sale items. They wouldn't part with them so I've come away with 2.30 worth of net curtain which I plan to cut and staple/tack into fruit nets.I wondered what all those bits of ribbon I cut off things would be useful for.Nearly came back with polyester lace for real fancy onesIt's dried up here so plan to come back from shopping and dig out one set of runners that are covered in black fly and white fly and not producing and pop some Brussel Sprouts there with fingers crossed.Well done with the MOT/tyres Dusty. All set now?Anyone who wants to complain about Vanilla there's a thread going on the Techi Forum and probably one on the Feedback forum. Can't bring up the links because it's so slow. The Met Office site used to be really good, could get it right within minutes but it's pure rubbish now. And hard to follow. I've started using the BBC one which now seems accurate.Less was it you said there's more doom on it's way in? Got to say though that I'm getting loads of jobs done in the house what with the rammed tourist situation and bad weather.

Not sure what your cloudbank is/was 2P - I think Lilian is mostly further north than where you are - supposed to be winds up to 5omph here overnight, but though its raining a bit more significantly than earlier there doesn't seem to be much wind...Also do a bit of genealogy myself Farway (usually a winter pursuit) - have never thought to try finding links to Erik the Red or anyone of that ilk though - sound like a fun rabbithole to try! (though trees on Ancestry website are about as reliable as met office weather forecasts...)

No vanilla on my old tablet.
windy as eck here this morning a right hoolie, enough to rattle the doors of the house inside it comes down the extractor fan. Off to work for me today so batten the hatches.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.5 -

Straight off the bat - OT - I didn't realise they named storms after actual people. Bottom of this link

I'm forever envious of people that are crafty and make things (what I wouldn't give to be able to draw like 2p or basket weave like Less) I did enjoy the time I was looking for who owned a bit of land a few years ago though, and I spent days and days at the library using their Ancestry account. It was good because they have full access and have things like ship's passenger lists etc. The degrees of separation thing is so interesting, I love all thatI wonder how big the flow chart would have to be to get us all on it....
Congrats to DGD Farway, I hope she has an amazing timeWhat with the weather difference it'll make her Christmas present a lot easier - floaty dresses, sun cream, flip flops, a big straw hat
I must have missed the bit where you got your car sorted 2p... bet you're glad to be back on the roadCake covers and bags for fruit protection is a great idea, and if it's scaring the squirrels that's a bonus!
Hopefully everyone's alright in this weather. It's blowing a proper hoolie out there now and forecast to get a bit stronger in an hour or so - gusts of 55/60 mph depending who you believe. I think we had plenty of rain overnight, well it's certainly very wet out thereLucky your party wasn't today wm
Wondering if @ArbitraryRandom has got sucked into the Vanilla vortex...
Fingers crossed the roads are clear up there wortI removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.6 -
Things that have never been said before, number one.
I've a pigeon on the roof of my car using the storm as a power wash.
Armpits and everything!
