My niece put her name down for a council flat many many years ago. She has never heard anything from the council, but if she did and got the flat, I believe she would be as entitled as any other person who was on the list.

I think they do it differently now days, but in those days if your name came up you were lucky and happy and grateful to get your accommodation.

My house is two bedroom (housing association) and my son lives with me. If and when he moves out I hate the thought that I would automatically be evicted and moved to a smaller place just because I was on my own. This is my home, well not mine, but you know what I mean. Home is where the heart is.

The thing about 1 bedroom council flats is that no-one wants them, in my local papers every weeks there is more of them than 2 and 3 bedrooms and people always want the 3 bedrooms, in the 80/90's everyone was entitled to a council property so you just put your name on the list and you would get one eventually, nowadays there is such a shortage that and my LA has turned around and said that only the homeless will get housed and everyone else has to privately rent. My friend is a lone parent in her 7th private rent in 5 years and keeps getting turfed out cause the landlord wants to sell to take advantage of the property boom, she cant get a council property yet there are couples earning a wage buying their council houses and selling them on with huge profits, I think there government should start getting out the cement and start building new one's

I know a guy who lives in a 1 bed council flat, and drives a rather expensive new-ish car, always buying expensive bottles of wine, eating out, spends £200 on a night out, and pays £350/month in child support to his 2 children (from 2 different partners). He's only a technician, so I presume he earns around £15k PA...

Something just doesn't add up. I'm sure there's a queue for council flats, so not sure how a single bloke who seems to have so much money got one! And he was talking about getting a new car, paying in cash, which costs £16k!!

This morning I heard him talking about how he makes £1000 a month buying and selling stuff on ebay, and he has 7 bank accounts! At least that would explain all the free cash and extravagant life style.

Is that legal? I have no idea about child support costs either, but I do know he pays around £350 a month for the 2 kids, so I suppose that would be right for just a technician salary??

I read all these stories about people who desparately want a council flat, and yet here's some guy living in one, with all this cash to splash... hardly seems fair. His family all live in council flats, so does that mean he has a better chance of getting one?

he could have been given the flat on medical grounds. i was with mine.

not all people who live in council accommodation are on benefits or a low income. when we first moved here we had a !!!! heap for a car, second hands furnishings etc but over the years we have gotten better jobs and can afford, not a luxury car, but a nice car. a holiday. new 'white goods'. new computer and laptop.

are you sure your not just a bit jealous?

i can understand the frustration of waiting for a council flat/house.
There's someone in my head, but it's not me

    tax dodging + council flat??

Thats the title of your thread, so the council flat is obviously relavant. Dont go getting the hump because not everyone wants the bloke evicted.

I have 4 bank accounts, funnily enough the tax man takes his whack from them all every year without me having told them I have them.

You can not hide money from the tax man by putting it in a bank account, all transactions are monitored and any hint of money laundering/fraud is flagged up.

The only way to keep money hidden is under the mattress and then you find you cant spend it on "flash cars" cos car dealers are not allowed to accept any more the 3k in cash before informing the Inland revenue. You cant even put a cash deposit down for a house - need a bankers draft or cheque.

Now wheres me ladder so I can climb up onto me bed :D

I rarely feel the need to post on here, i'm much more of a lurker but this is amazing. (some narrow minded) People think because you live in a council house you must be on benefits, be poor, have no car/life etc. Unless like others have said you're a mad stalker or an ex, you have no idea how long he's been waiting for that flat or what his situation is. You really do need to stop worrying about other peoples affairs. Tut tut.

It's pretty obvious that the OP hasn't got a clue how council waiting lists work - it has nothing to do with finances, it's based on the needs of each individual.

Thankfully they don't base thier decisions on the say so of the OP on here.

I'm sorry, is the bit in pink supposed to be your comment, or are you trying to make people think that I said that? That's unfair. You shouldn't try and edit what someone else put.

If it's YOUR comment, then I already pointed out that it's a PERSONAL moral judgement, and in that situation you would stay in a council house. I already said that, so I'm not sure what you're getting at? Each case is different.

I'm talking about a single bloke with plenty of money that could easily afford to rent privately and let someone else have the council house who is in far more need of it.

    Hey

I don't know how it works everywhere but where I am, council properties are banded, so only applicants from certain bands can apply. Thus, if the property is listed as, say, a B or C-banded one, then it wouldn't matter if you were of a more higher priority, eg emergency or A-band, you wouldn't be entitled to apply.

I see your point, although in reality it might not be that simple.

    really, who cares?

if he was earning that much on ebay, then why isnt he claiming the dole, and not bothering to pay his rent, child support, council tax etc, u dont know where he got that money entirely, less ur gonna root thru his rubbish to make absolutely certain.

he may well have 7 bank accounts and a ton of overdraft on them all too, and if youre so concerned, why dont u just ask him outright?
