tax dodging + council flat??

Trading on e-bay is a gray area in terms of Inland Revenue.
If he is buying wholesale stock and reselling it on ebay then technically he is 'in business' and would have to declare himself as such and pay appropriate taxes on the income. If he is just selling bits and bobs but regularly then there is no tax concerns at all.
Equally, he could set-up himself as a limited company (£200) and then the sales will be turnover of the businesses (rather than income) upon which he can pull a dividend from it annually at a lower tax rate, much better than a proper salary at 23% and 40% if in the upper earnings band.
If he is just buying odds and ends, a bit here and a bit there, he will not even feature on HMRC's radar - they've got MUCH bigger fish to catch to bo honest, although HMRC do trawl ebay regularly and monitor usernames to see what sort of stuff they are elling/income from such.
Bottom line - if the OP thinks he's up-to-something there is the Inland Revenue hotline to grass him up, but the OP also needs to realise that many highly paid people with skills and jobs live in council houses...and even buy them as well and if Polish immigrants can drive around in Audi's then I've no issue with anyone else having a flash car - provided it is not flashier than mine!.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
This might surprise you but you don't have to drive round in a ford Cortina to live in a council flat.
How do you know he wasn't in the queue for a flat anyway? People with nice cars and money are allowed to go on the waiting list too, they are also allowed to be single & have an income and buy bottles of wine. In fact the fact he is a single man makes it even easier to get a council flat.
Why does it bother you enough to post about it? Is it envy by any chance? You seem to know an awful lot about his personal business & outgoings.
Don't take it personally but having been a council tenant for 36 years you come accross a bit narrow minded. We all know people who manage to do quite nicely for themselves but you seem to have a rather dated idea about how council tenants should live.
Did you know that some council tenants can pay thier own rent & even get credit cards these days? Shocking, how dare they be financially secure! lol
Holy Guacamole! Keep yer knickers on!!
Of course council tenants can have Bugattis, credit cards, hot tubs, and holidays to Timbuktu etc... I'm not dumb! And I'm certainly not jealous! I have everything I could ever wish for and wouldn't swap my life with anyone's!
I just believe that given there's a big queue for council houses, they should go to those most in need. How many people on here post saying they are struggling to pay private rent, and are stuck low down on a council list waiting and waiting? And here we have someone who can easily afford to rent privately, but doesn't. I think that's morally wrong, and personally I would feel guilty if I had a council house, could easily afford to rent privately, and knew that there were lots of people who would really appreciate a council house.
But yes the council house bit is irrelavent, I just wanted to know that if someone earns £12k a year profit on ebay, do they have to declare it to the taxman, and does the multiple bank accounts have something to do with "hiding" this money? Why does it bother you enough to post about it? Is it envy by any chance? You seem to know an awful lot about his personal business & outgoings.
Nothing bothers me at the moment if earning £12k profit on ebay doesn't have to be taxed. I know alot about his business because he was telling us all (bragging) about it.
I just think it's not a nice person who brags about earning an extra £12k and not declaring it to the tax man, and then laughing about how that means he doesn't have to cough up any more money to the mother's of his children. I've never met someone who has so little respect for his kids, and deliberately goes out his way not to pay the maintenance that he ought to be paying, but I guess if that's ok by you lot, then I rest my case and suppose it must be a more common thing than I thought, and I shall try to be less concerned about issues like this in the future.

Many years ago I lived next door to someone who was keeping tabs on my entire estate!
I was on benefits at that time and managed to get a car from a friend which I paid for in three installments. My neighbour said "How can you afford a new car if you are on benefits!" The cost of the car? £150!!!!!
It was horrible to feel you were being watched by someone who had nothing to do with your life. I was so glad when she moved out.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

No snooping whatsoever. He was bragging about it. I was just under the impression that many of the single parents on here would be up in arms if they found out their OH was earning an extra £12k than they declared to the CSA or taxman that should have gone towards child maintenance payments, but instead was being spent on flash cars.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

The £350 p/m child maintainance he pays is £350 more than I ever got off my ex husband for 5 kids. In 8 years the CSA never made him pay a penny despite working full time.
Even taking into consideration he has 2 kids its still £175 p/m each i'd have been delighted with that. How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
To be honest, id rather this bloke had the council flat than an economic migrant who has been here for 5 mins.
Incidently £350 per month assuming a 15 % of his salary means he earns £2331 per month Net, which is an awful lot more than the 15k you have decided he earns. Infact 15k net is about £1000 per month net.
Fact of the matter is this bloke has £2k per month in his pocket, lives in a 1 bedroom council flat which can't have had much of a waiting list for him to be placed in straight away, so pays little rent. I think i could manage to save for a new car out of that!
If you really belive that he is earning 12k tax free from ebay then report him to the Inland Revenue, who will ensure he pays what he was due to IF he has been earning in this way. Hi i'm kind of in a similar situation so can see where you are coming from..we were unable to buy a house a while back and would never have made the mortgage payments..we qualified for a shared ownership house, we have been waiting 7+ years and earned the right amount to be able to get one, it is lovely, brand new town house in a very nice new complex and we are very lucky..BUT that was only 4 months ago and we have both had pay rises, we have 4 loans between us and they all end at the start of the year so we will be much better off, we plan on getting a new car and with looking at the house and car from an outsiders view yes we will prob have the neighbours wondering if we have won the lottery and people being jealous as we are quite young!! things change and it doesnt mean he wasnt entitled to it in the first place..i wouldnt worry things always catch up with these people if they aren't being quite right with the truth!!0

He was bragging at work, no alcohol involved.
Sorry for caring. I guess it just upsets me to think that someone can have so little respect and care so little for their children, and see their parental responsibility as such a joke.
And if people don't agree that council houses should be given to those that genuinely need them rather than those would could more than easily rent privately, then fair enough. I would rather that tax subsidises someone's rent that genuinely needs that council house.
Thank you very much for all the insults and wrong presumptions you made. I have absolutely nothing against people living in council houses who genuinely can't afford to rent privately, and would like to see more council houses given to those who so desparately need one.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

pinkshoes there seems to be two issues here that are annoying you.
Firstly the one bed council flat, why should this chap not be entitled to this flat
he has much right as the next person to have a council flat, as you say it's a one bed not a two/three bed flat so i can't see how this is unfair to others.
Secondly the csa give the guy a break he pays money already for his kids, he pays what the goverment say's he has to. His ebay account could be a little hobby.
Would you prefer a drug dealer in the flat, whose a waste of space and doesn't pay child support

There are an awful lot of people in council accommodation who are better off than those struggling in private accommodations. Especially older families. It doesn't mean they should be evicted, but it does mean a shortage of affordable rented housing.0
