OK folks, you're not going to like this. I need to let you know publishing time scales - i hope this book will go ahead, if it does the likely publication date is between march and august 2006!
Excellent!! More time to post/share/explore more OS ways and means. Actually, I don't think that is a long wait at all when you consider the work that will be involved.

  • Hi all

I have been checking this thread out for a while now and thought i should add my bit!

I think the book is a FAB idea as when you come on here to look for something inparticular, i ALWAYS get side tracked and spend hours printing stuff off, just incase i cant find it next ime!! Also end up with loads of paper everywhere!!

So Hurrah!!! For Martin!!!!! I will get my thinking cap on and keep an eye on here too, so do we all get to have some input then????

    Hope so!!

I think the book is a great idea, and the benefits of it excellent for all concerned.

I have a question though, and it may not seem in the spirit of this encouraging thread. :o

I had not thought through the implications of posting recipes on this site. Comments and tips are there to be circulated, but when you put together and create and write a recipe, by posting it here, I guess we're offering the copyright to the site?

Am I right in thinking that we should refrain from posting any recipes that we ourselves may work towards having published at a later date? Martin, I can't imagine you'd be so cruel as to chase people over copyright if they included recipes in a book of their own that they posted here first. But I guess that legally you would be entitled to do so? How would you view this? And will your oldstyle book include recipes? They're a significant proportion of what we share here...

I know we can edite and delete our posts at any time, but would you be contacting individuals regarding the inclusion of specific repies in a printed book?

I think thats a legit question. To be honest you do ceed copywright to the site when you write (and technically even once deleted it is still there). No I will not chase copyright for things like that (copying stuff I've written yes) but truth is the publishers would own the copyright of the book not me.

This is a careful balance. I think it will be a practical impossibility to notify about each bit of info going for the book (especially as most will be amalgams of info not specific info).

So yes if you are planning to commercially publish something yourself (not an easy thing I'm afraid), then it is probably best to refrain for the moment, but if you're talking about notes', local newsletters etc, then i wouldn't worry too much

Thanks Martin - I'm not planning a competing Old Style book though, or anything big! More I was thinking of the fact that any gardening articles I write for magazines may require recipes I've devised using the produce.

I'll keep all that in mind though, with the publishers eventually owning the copyright of the book. They're not all as lovely as you!

I agree, it would be impossible to ask permission for all things to be included, especially when our thoughts are all turned into coherent chapters! What an exciting project for someone to take on! Wish it were me!

While we're on the subject of copyright - and on the subject of recipes...

..there are quite a number of recipes quoted that have been culled from other web sites and various cook books. Not all of them are necessarily attributed correctly so it would be advisable there to contact the poster to find out for sure if it has been obtained from a source or is a purely home made recipe.
