Can they be cancelled when there's still a balance outstanding without affecting your credit rating?

You can certainly cancel the card with a balance outstanding. You just carry on paying it off but the account is closed. I'm fairly sure that it doesn't affect your credit rating but you might want to double-check that. I closed my Barclaycard account with a £4500ish outstanding balance but I didn't check my credit rating.

Ed: Quick google suggests that in general closing cards can potentially affect your credit rating as you have less available credit. However, if you have lots of cards that are nearly maxed out or a lot of finance, your credit rating may not be great anyway. Strangely enough, I have 2 cards with zero balances (one for holiday rates and one that was acquired dt a family emergency) and my credit rating is a bit lower because I DON'T spend on them! I don't think that it would be lowered significantly or irrepairably (sp!?) - it would have a much bigger impact if you defaulted. I'm guessing that you might be concerned about your ability to get future credit? You might get some more in depth responses on the credit cards board but in general it's optimal to have a couple of well-managed cards. If you're only paying the minimum balances, that is already less than ideal.

@carrielovesfanta thanks very useful. I’ll ask in the credit card board. Don’t want to get a bad rating - my current rating is good, just need to deal with the level of debt. Don’t plan on not ever using credit again so need to maintain the rating.

@determined_new_ms Sorry to hear that you still have toothache,  you have my sympathy,  horrible pain.
Both boys back to school today so I've achieved quite a bit around the house
    * checked banking/updated spreadsheet
    * made packed lunches for the kids for tomorrow
    * leftovers for dh & I at lunchtime
    * like @ziggy2407 - our under sink cupboard is overflowing, so lots of cleaning and use it ups happening
    * emptied and reorganised most of the kitchen cupboards (ran out of time) moved bits together that need using up
    * rang specsvers to ask them to extend my contact lense suspension - I suspended it just before covid hit as I had a bit of a build up of lenses but haven't worn lenses at all since.
    Thats all for now

    Take care all.

  • Morning folks!

Feeling like a boss this morning! Smashed out a 6am gym session (I suspect I will be able to feel my lats tomorrow!) and then drove to work myself
I can't tell you how much better I feel for being back at the gym. After everything that happened last year and how long that fatigue lasted, I'm finally feeling like myself again
Did well last night as I got the jelly made and finished off my shawl. And now it's Friday - yay!

    Today's plan:
    :star: B/L/D from stores
:star: OH to pick up shopping for the week - click and collect still as our area is having a covid spike
    :star: Block my shawl
:star: OH teaching a skype lesson
    :star: Label up jelly jars

    Have a good day everyone!
